I wouldn't trust them. They claim not to, but check out my link. Apparenly they lied about their ducks...so why not chickens as well?

I do not eat any chickens (or turkey, ducks, etc), battery or free-range. I have pet chickens and have seen first hand how smart, loving, gentle, and intelligent these birds can be. For me, trying to eat a chicken, no matter how humanely raised it was, is the equivalent of asking me to eat my dog. I also don't buy eggs--though I will eat my pet chicken's eggs sometimes. It's less wasteful than just throwing them out.

EDIT: Yeah, you'd think they wouldn't be in this section if they don't even know what they're talking about and think it's funny. :-(

yewr, every where does....if it aint free range it is battery!

Hi,I have stopped buying chicken as I do not trust any of them.

they are a lot cheaper though. I wouldnt buy them but i can see why some people would

battery chicken??? this is interesting.ive never heard about it

Assault and battery? Do the chickens press charges or is it one of those domestic things where they take the farmer back and the cops get frustrated?

No but they do ones that come with an adapter.

EDIT - It makes me laugh that you're so humourless. I don't eat meat so I have no idea if M&S sell battery chickens. Lighten up FGS, or on the other hand don't bother as you made me laugh this morning with your uptight attitude.

I think you need to get plugged into the current way of thinking because otherwise you're going to make me blow a fuse. ;)

Of course they don't and of course I wont & don't.

EDIT

Thumbs down?? Jeez, lighten up people. And they say vegitarians have no sense of humour. [tsk]

I have also read thet they do...and this will probably continue until people like us boycott sales of battery chickens in every shop

As a vegetarian, I wouldnt buy any chicken anyway, however I do eat eggs but will only purchase fresh farm eggs from hens that are completely free range, luckily I live i the country and have immediate access to such things.

Its an inhumane way to treat animals and anyone who eats meat should consider the consequences of doing so - free range all the way!

Of course they do.

Any commercial chicken they isn't identified as free range or barn will be battery caged. Includng all those processed chicken produces such as frozen drumsticks, slices etc

Most commercial "free range" birds are little more than outdoor caged birds. No scare-mongering or relying on animal rights videos from me, I've seen 2 of Sainsbury's freerange supplying farms - its a joke.

Pure economics relying on the ignorance of consumers.

Their toy section did have some wind up clockwork ones I think

become a vegetarian ,love animals dont eat them.

peace = D

No such thing as "battery" chickens where I now live. It seems to be a uniquely western phenomena. A friend owns a chicken farm (where i normally get my eggs), and you can't even get to the henhouse without being sanitized. It is cleaner than most human hospital operating rooms. The chickens have room to move, get adequate sunlight, free food/water, even free healthcare. No, he doesn't slaughter chickens for food, he only sells eggs and breed for stock upgrades etc etc.

M & S are gradually phasing battery chickens/eggs out of their ranges. They now only supply free range eggs, and they are working towards free range chicken/egg products throughout, including ready meals. If you look and the packaging, you'll find that things are specifically labelled if they are free range. I had some M&S macaroni cheese today, and that was labelled as using free range eggs.

However, not all products there are free range yet, so if it's important to you, read the labels.

In answer to your comments regarding the treatment of battery hens - I agree that it isn't the ideal practise. However, not everyone can afford to choose free range products, so I don't think it's fair to criticise all people who buy them. I believe that supermarkets should be following M&S's lead to move towards more ethical practises where possible, which in the long run will make prices a bit more competitive.

All cheap chickens are "barn reared" (battery conditions) unless they are free range or organic.
So yes they will have some. No I don't buy them, but I can understand why people would if they are struggling to feed their family on a low income. It's very cheap protein.

Yes and if they've got the right type of batteries, they'll walk all the way home.

Hi , I never eat chicken as I'm a vegetarian and I only ever buy free range organic eggs and I buy them from J.Sainsburys.

They only supply free range eggs.

Where do the batteries go????

EDIT.

As someone else said,

Nip down to the shops and when you are hunting your free range produce, nip into the non food isle and get a sense of humour, oh and a life.

My wife is vegetarian, we only eat free range everything, but you can still have a laugh at a stupidly worded question. Oh no, I forgot, you are so stuck up yourself you cant!

Rants like yours are the reason the anti - humaine food brigade get such a leg up. Gees!
