To all you vegans and vegitarians!?!
Answers: Ok i have been hearing things about marshmellos having meat in them! Do you think/know its true? and did you know when you don't eat organtic tomatos you are eating fish, scientist have been putting fish genes into the tomatos we eat today!
Marshmallows contain gelatine, just like jell-o or gummy candy do. Gelatine is made from boiling down animal hides, bones and hooves for their collagen.
Marshmallows also contain white sugar, which is bleached using bones.
Also, not all non-organic tomatoes are genetically modified. GMO produce aren't a big issue outside of North America, especially the U.S., because of E.U. food rules. Even now, Flavr Savr tomatoes aren't sold in the U.S... but I'm pretty sure those tomatoes didn't have fish genes engineered into them.
Eat More Chicken!!!!
Marshmellos have gelatin in them.
They fish/tomato thing is a veggie tale, an urban legend.
No, that is not true. There are no fish genes in tomatoes. Although it was experimented with in the 1990s, that brand of tomato never made it to grocery stores or into consumers' hands. There is a lot of regulatory stuff that needs to be done between the laboratory and the grocery. It's not like some mad scientist cooks up something great and the next day everyone is forced to buy it.
However there are many items that are genetically modified and not labelled as such. Yeast is the most common example.
And yes, marshmallows contain gelatin but there are vegan ones available.
Drusilla,
You're right; the Flav'r Sav'r was an ethylene antisense mutant; no fish genes in that. I think it was pulled because of poor consumer reaction.
Just because the genes from cold water fish were used to help tomatoes fight off cold weather does not actually mean there is/ are fish in tomatoes. Although I should stress that organics are safer than the other "frankenfoods" that are on the market. Marshmellows are not vegan although not all vegetarians have a problem with eating animal by products like that found in gelatin. Hope this helps....ps I don't support the genetic modification of any foods
Marshmallows are normally made with gelatin and depending on th manufaturer, this gelatine may have been derived from animals or agar-agar ( a type of seaweed most common in asia). As for the "fish tomatoes", that was tried but was not commercially viable. And in any case, Chimpanzees have 98% of the human genes or dna code.. does that make them humans (and vice versa I suppose)
You can buy marshmallows that are suitable for vegetarians you just have to read the label
