Would hunting for meat be more environmentally friendly than factory farming?!

Question: Factory farming and factory meat processing have a lot of negative things about them.

Would moving from factory farming to a way in which you can only eat what you hunt be more humane and more environmentally friendly because animals would

No longer be bred for meat.
They would live out in the open.
Environmental problems that occour with factory farming would disappear.
It would put a lot of people off eating meat if they had to kill it for themselves.

Yes, of course.

I would still abhor eating meat.

But it would be a small step up as it would be a little more natural.
Hopefully, people would then see how cruel and unnecessary it is, in general.

EDIT: What cark says about the animals not being able to feed all of America is true, and should drive home the point that the human population cannot be naturally sustained on the current levels of meat consumption. It's unnatural and the only solution is for everyone to cut back. (Not just meat but resources in general).

Have you read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma? He doesn't advocate hunting, although he explores it in the book. He is definitely against factory farming -- quite a chapter on that in the book. I think you need to get more specific -- hunting how much? what? where? And what about other options, like raising animals in a more humane and healthy (for the animals and for the eaters) way? I really recommend reading Michael Pollan.

I love hunting!!! I live on a farm too. We dont have the bad factory meat and it taste so much better. This plan of your would never be feasible because the ecosystem would be destroyed and the animals couldn't feed all of america. It would however work well for the average farmer.

Nope. Some of the countries, like mine, have no pigs or any other common animals to eat like cow. We got the pork from transporting. If the law allows hunting to be done, do you know that it is in great danger for some animals that are going to be almost extinct? Let's say for tigers, poachers want their skin. When they were bought to the court, they might just find an excuse of eating tiger meat! One more thing. Hunting means weapons are needed. You never know if the person around you, or even near you is not hunting for food, and yet, it wants to rob you! When caught by police, it might just say it is going to hunt for food! Considering this points, do you think hunting for meat is better than factory farming?

This is a tough question to answer.
As history has shown, animals that are coveted tend to go extinct when not maintained by humans or monitored by protection. I think that if left to roam on their own, cows, pigs, etc. etc. would face death just a fast as in captivity, if not sooner. They would not survive in urban areas, therefore they would be over hunted in rural areas, where, undoubtedly the majority of the meat they provide would be wasted by persons who were not familiar with proper butchery techniques. No one would guarantee their population therefore, like longhorns and the buffalo, their numbers would shrink eventually resulting in the demise of an entire specie.

Do you mean cows and pigs living out in the open? Or just eating the foods that are currently hunted?

I think at first it would be more environmentally friendly. But soon there would be no untouched preserves, because hunters would travel farther and farther afield to find meat. I think that if most people started treating meat as an accompaniment instead of entree it might work.

I do think it would be more humane if people ate what they killed.

I don't think it would put a lot of people off meat. It didn't for the thousands of years that people ate meat before industrial slaughters.

think about this:
If all the factory farms were shut down, and every single human hunted for meat, would there really be that many wild animals left? most humans eat way too much meat anyway. it's not necessary in the first place!

I totally believe that hunting your own meat or raising it yourself is the ONLY way to go if you're going to eat meat.

generally yeah I suppose, you can guarantee the animals are free range and have had a better life
I still oppose consuming any animals though

Yes, but it would only work if we voluntarily lowered our human population over several generations. Meat would also be an occasional addition to the diet rather than a daily large portion of it.
