Will being a vegetarian affect surgery?!

Question: I'm supposed to have surgery sometime in the future, (about a year or so from now) and I was told by a family member that being a vegetarian could hinder surgery as it could affect my blood and thus the healing process. Does anyone know if this holds true?

Not true. I'm vegetarian and I had knee surgery twice a few years back.

I read the medical records myself; there was no mention of anything like that.

Is your family member a doctor?

Thanks for the replies, you guys were wonderfully helpful. :) Report It

  • Depends on if you're getting enough protein, because lack of it can cause serious blood problems (same goes with too much)

    hope it helps! :)

Absolutely not.. unless you are in very poor health. Have a Dr. check-up to make sure you are in good health and address your concerns with your Dr. I am betting you are fine.. likely in better health than ever... good luck. But being vegetarian - no this will not affect your blood.. nor your healing!!

no, unless you don't get any nutrients, or are in bad health.

In what capacity is the family member knowledgable in this subject ?

This does not hold true and a vegetarian diet will not impact your ability to heal.
