I think that Synergy has probably been pasteurized, which would kill the culture. Ebay has a lot of people selling kombucha starters (cultures/mushrooms) very inexpensively. They ship the kombucha culture with "starter tea". You add the mushroom and the starter tea to a sterile jar, add pure water and sugar, and let it ferment. It's really pretty easy. Let it ferment to your own personal taste. Good luck, and namaste!

the what?

Ok.

Wells....first you need a microbrewery kit, a pair of tweezers, surgical gloves, cotton, Pikachu, Bulbasaur and a pair of Onyx.

If you only have a couple of the items, don't even bother. You'll only conjure up Satan. You gotta have everything, and then do a seance, and ask Sammy Davis Jr. for trhe rest of the details.

I have used the synergy kombucha beverage too and I love it!! I do not know whether you can use that growth as a starter though! There is another similar beverage called "bread drink" which is also a fabulous fermented beverage with many health benefits. I buy it from an Internet site and I love it! I have also seen ads for the sale of kombucha starter but like you, am concerned over their methods of preparation. The synergy drink is quite expensive where I live., $3.69 is the lowest price!! I will look at your Question to see if anyone else answering has a better suggestion!
