Hello, A question for Vegans!!?!


Question: I know that for protein, Iron etc. you have lot of options. How do you get your regular portion of Calcium?? What will you eat/drink? If you have acidity problem and doctor suggests you to eat yogurt/butter milk atleast two times a day, what you will eat? Can you please tell me?

I know that you might have answered this kind of questions a lot. But please will you write again?

Surprise! Spinach has a decent amount of calcium! There are also fortified soy products like soy milk.

Your Dr.'s advice confuses me. I have reflux and acid issues and have been informed that the "don't eat spicy or acidic food eat this instead" is either a myth or a very minor factor. You could actually solve both problems at once by taking something like tums- has calcium and neutralizes acid.

However, if you produce too much acid, get Prilosec OTC or a similar proton pump inhibitor has there are the meds that actually stop your body from producing excess acid. I don't understand why your doctor would only suggest eating dairy. I would think if you are afraid of acidic food, don't eat citrus and take some tums, but seriously, you might need medications to control it if it is a real problem.

calcium can be obtained through darker leafy greens. it can also be obtained through nettles, raspberry leaf, dandelion as well. but best obtained through dark leaffy greens. and more fulfilling than eating a pill or drinking an infusion.

Mostly foods with artificially enriched calcium. That's the good thing about modern science, we can make almost anythign nutritious if we want to.

Calcium is the least of worries for a vegan...most green, leafy vegetables are loaded with calcium. The problem with calcium deficiencies in America is too high of protein intake, which causes your body to leach calcium off of your bones for digestion/extraction of the excess protein....vegans obviously aren't getting excess protein.

Also, many foods and drinks, such as OJ, are calcium enriched.

I drink soy milk and eat soy yogurt, both of which are fortified and give you something like 30% of your daily calcium per serving. I also take vitamins and eat dark leafy greens like kale.

Well there is calcium in leafy green vegetables like kale, and soy products are often fortified with calcium - for instance, soy milk or tofu. There is calcium in certain whole grains and in certain nuts. You can also take vegan supplements.

You should ask your doctor about non-dairy ways to handle your acidity problem, I don't think anyone would be qualified to advise you about that without knowing your medical history.

I got calcium deficient recently so I looked it up ( The cramps you get from swimming on calcium deficiency are something else- god that hurt)

Almonds, Raisins ( in large amounts), Broccoli, Chickpeas

thats what I found as high calcium Vegan foods - there are probably more

you can get a calcium supplement if you go to the link below it has a good way of getting your claium vitamins i think its on page 4 scroll down to the bottom and you'll see the pages i myself is trying to make the transition to become a vegan

I was diagnosed with mild reflux earlier this year. A big factor is STRESS!!!

I tried the soy yogurt (Whole Soy & Company), but it made my belly feel fiery. I've discovered that I really don't like eating much early in the morning. And something carby works best for me. Chewing gum sometimes helps when I'm having an attack (as I said, it's often stress-induced) or even to prevent them.

I haven't changed my diet, although I try to avoid eating less than three hours before bed. I also make sure I sit upright for at least 45 minutes after eating. Also try yoga or meditation.

I know I'm not really answering the original question, but I hope helped you with your secondary issue.

Anyway, there's also frozen soy yogurt, also by Whole Soy & Company, and many brands of soy ice creams. Earth Balance is a vegan tub margarine that's pretty good on potatoes.

Good vegan sources of calcium include almonds, black beans, broccoli, calcium-fortified orange juice, collard greens, great northern beans, kale, kidney beans, mustard greens, navy beans, orange juice, pinto beans, sesame seeds, soybeans, soymilk, textured vegetable protein (TVP), and tofu.
