I take iron pills too. I would continue taking them if you cannot find another kind. You need the iron. As for what someone else said needing iron does not always have to do with vegetarianism I needed them before I was a vegetarian. I was slightly anemic. (If you can be that)
The kind I take do not contain gelatin they are "Spring Valley" brand. It has a green cap, says 27 mg, high potency and has Iron in brown letters if that helps. :)

You need iron in your diet.

I do not know of any other supplements.

If you are eating correctly as a Vegetarian or Vegan you do not need to take any Iron supplements

Vegetarians need NONE at all

Vegans, I THINK ( not one yet) need to get Vitamin B12

As my memory servers me Brocolli, lentils, chickpeas ( cant spell tonight) are good sources of Iron. Eat plenty of them

Just take a spoon of blackstrap molasses every day. That will build up iron. I used to do that when I was giving blood a lot. Now they have lowered the iron requirements for men, so I can give blood without taking molasses.

I know for a fact it worked on me because I got my blood tested and they said my iron was low. I took molasses for only two or three days and went back and they said it was okay.

Lots of vegetarian foods are high in iron, but I never saw that anything was as easy to absorb as molasses. Another hint, make sure you get adequate vitamin C--it helps in the absorption of iron.

you mean they are not vegan.
they are still ok for a vegetarian to eat.
did you mean vegan?

you could look in the store to see if there is an iron pill that doesnt contain gelatin and give the ones you have to a friend.
I think its important that you get your iron since you arnt eating meat (or milk or eggs if your vegan). so just look for ones that dont contain gelatin

Take the iron pills, dear, rather than tinker around with your health, or with some of the crazy notions on here. Your health is more important than a little bit of gelatin.

Pumpkin seeds (pepitas) have a fifth of your daily iron in a serving. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepitas

If you specifically want a supplement, go to http://www.veganessentials.com as they have many supplements, all of which are vegan.

IMO since you already bought them, I would finish them off. All the stuff I have had for awhile from before I went vegan (shoes, some pasta with egg, etc) I am using until its done. Not everyone has the money to buy new things. I also just accidentally bought a gelatin containing supplement. (I looked at the ingredients, but after looking at about 10 different labels I must have just skimmed too much and missed it) Since I noticed after I used them, I am finishing them out. When you make a mistake, just learn from it!

If you really must take iron supplements, check the back before yo ubuy it to make sure it says no animal biproducts used....

But otherwise skip 'em and eat more veggies! muhaha
