Is Smuckers Jelly vegetarian?!
Answers: Is Smuckers Jelly considered vegetarian? I looked on the label and it didn't say that it uses gelatin but I keep reading that jelly isn't vegetarian because of the gelatin so I just want to be sure.
Ingredients Seedless Strawberry
STRAWBERRIES, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CORN SYRUP, SUGAR, FRUIT PECTIN, CITRIC ACID.
Looks to be vegetarian to me :)
e-mail them and ask, it really should be labled if it is,
If some animal has not sacrificed its life for my meal, then I'm really not all that interested in eating. I wouldn't fret too much over pectin vs. gelatin. If your ancient ancestors had not had meat in their diets, you would not have evolved into the cunning creature you are today. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a leaf?
I bring this up because many vegans adopt the life style out of peer pressure. I know people who think drinking soda pop is evil. It may (or may not) be healthy, but to do or not do something out of political correctness is just plain silly. Most people need the nutrients best provided by meat and/or dairy products. Being raised on a farm probably colors my perspective, but milk, cheese, eggs, and meat are all perfectly good foods, and are delicious when properly served.
To directly address your question--I have made dozens of different types of jams and jellies. Some require the addition of pectin to get the juice to gel, while others are rich in natural pectin. "Gelatin" is not normally added to any jams or jellies (the difference being the fruit pulp vs the juice).
Hey i happen to be a vegan =D and of course jelly is vegetarian it is nothing but mushed berrys and sugar and also good for you. vegetarians can have anything they want unless it had meat it . so i think ur pretty safe with that. and if your worried about gelatin it should deff tell you if you read the jar. if it doesnt say it then its not lieing =). hope this help! byeee <3
that's helpful Pasha I'm sure she appreciated that. I thinks its vegetarian but the only way to know for sure is to ask them, try their website
You must be British :-) The confusion arises from the different American and British definitions for jelly.
British jelly = American jello (Jell-O)
British jam = American jelly (this is what you are asking about)
British jam (with seeds and pulp) = American jam
If it has gelatin, then it isn't vegetarian. :)
I am a former chef and a vegetarian, jelly in the respects to preseves is vegan and vegetarian, pectin is used to set both, jelly is made from the juices sans the pulp/whole fruit and seeds like jam, and all are cooked and the other ingredients added, it sets naturally. marmalade is made with both juice and fruit.
Jelly in the respects of the dessert Jello or Royal Gelatin is not, there are kosher ones made with the seaweed based agar-agar in the place of the other gel which does have animal products.
In the UK, Jello is called "jelly". Maybe that is what is confusing.
Some of them are...some of them aren't. The ones with the actual fruit in them...tend to be vegetarian friendly....they aren't all though so look.
All most all of the ones that don't have fruit in them aren't.
Smuckers does not use gelatin to set the fruit it uses pectin.
No animal product is needed.
