How can I get the crusty outside that fried chicken has for my tofu without eggs(vegan)?!

Question: How can I get the crusty outside the fried chicken has for my tofu pieces without using eggs? I tryied using water..and that didn't quite work. I'm trying to become a vegan...but I want fried tofu like the kind I used to make with eggs. Is there anything that would work?...or just use water as the binder and accept that things are going to be different now as a vegan. I hope not..that sucks. ALSO I have no access to fake egg products...nor would I want to use them...so something like emergency egg replacer is not an option. Is there any hope for my tofu?
I'm using tofu..flour and salt, peper, and maybe some other spice...don't know if that matters but in case it does..there it is.lol.

Mix water and cornstarch really thin like white sauce, dust your tofu lightly with the seasoned flour, dip in the cornstarch and water, then in seasoned flour again. Then fry until it is the color you want. It should be nice and crispy, the corn starch puffs a bit its great.

If you want it to taste like the fried chicken crust, season the flour with season salt, garlic powder and black pepper.

Can you use milk? If not, try soy milk. It may not work out the same though.

Are you making a batter or dippig wet pieces in dry flour?

You can try and double dip it. I'd use rice or soy milk instead of water then flour, then milk, then flour again.

Or use a tempura-style coating or a batter instead of regular flour.

I don't know what your aversion to egg-replacer is about. It's pretty much just potato starch and tapioca flour.

well usually if you deep fry your tofu it should give you a crunchy outer shell (works for me)..hmm maybe you can try to cover it with a thin blanket of tapioca flour? hopes that works...

Use pankuo breadcrumbs. or cornstarch. you don't have to use milk or eggs to make a crunchy coating by the way.

I'm not sure, but I think your problem could be with your cooking method. Try frying the tofu in really hot oil for a few minutes on each side before turning the heat right down. This is just theory...if you try it. let me know how it turns out.

Make a batter out of Flour, water, salt, pepper, a few other herbs and spices, (I forget which ones). Wet your Tofu with water and roll it in flour. Then dip it in your batter then deep fry

Well there is this type of powder that you can put on there to make it crunchy!

An alternate to what a lot of people have posted is a beer batter, often used on onion rings. Equal parts beer and flour will batter ANYTHING.

cornstarch, oil, cornmeal! Oh if you eat chicken YOU'RE NOT VEGAN Because CHICKEN IS MEAT!
