Hello,
No, fruits doesn't have to be cold. Refrigeration makes them stay fresh for longer time.
Hear are some web-sites that WHY you should refrigerate and how!!

Some of them like bananas shouldn't be refrigerated but most will spoil much more quickly if kept at room temperature.
yes bananas hate the cold and turn brown
but they are still good to eat although ugly
apples and oranges don't mind the cold
grapes like the cold and will last a lot longer
the purpose of refrigeration generally is to slow/stop the growth of micro-organisms that will cause the food to spoil
im not sure about bananas that others have said, but if u intend to keep your dozen of oranges for the week, its definitely best to keep them in the fridge.
Natural enzymes and bacteria continue to break down the fruit and cold helps to slow the process so they last longer. If you store bananas in the frig, they will become dark colored, but are still ok to eat. Avocados should not be frigerated. They tend to last longer and taster better under normal room temperature. Apples and oranges are amoung fruits that last longer in a frig.

Well, don't refridgerate bananas, they will get brown and spotty; and if you want something to ripen faster (like pears) don't refridgerate them either.
I would refridgerate anything I don't plan on eating within 2 - 3 days, it'll slow down its ripening process. For instance, if I bought nectarines that were hard, they would ripen very quickly in a bowl on my table, but if I put them in the fridge I could keep them for a week or two and they'd remain hard.
I refridgerate apples because I like the taste of a cold apple. I like to refridgerate citrus fruit like oranges because if they stay out more than a week or so they get this greenish-blue mold on them.
I think the benefits of leaving them out are that they ripen faster; meanwhile the benefit of refridgeration is that some fruits might taste better cold, and it'll keep them longer.
Note: If your fridge is too cold your fruits might get too cold and get mottled and never ripen; I had to adjust my fridge setting because I ruined three pounds of peaches I was planning to use for peach tarts.
Leave fruits you wish to ripen at room temperature.
Refrigerate all ripened fruits to slow that process.
Refrigerate unripened fruits that you wish to keep longer and move them to room temperature to ripen when you anticipate using them.
