What is a close alternative to silk as a fabric?!
I contacted the vendor, and he said he could use different type of fabric. What are good alternatives to silk that are widely available that have a similar look.

This is a picture of the dress, if that's of any use, don't know if it is.
Answers: I want to purchase a wedding dress from India, but this dress is made with raw silk. I am against the wearing of silk just because of the countless numbers of silk worms killed to make even just a small amount of it. I'm a vegetarian and I really am conscious about what I do and wear to the best extent possible.

Humane alternatives to silk include nylon, polyester, Tencel, milkweed seed-pod fibers, silk-cotton tree filaments, and rayon. Ahimsa silk, produced in India for Hindus by the company Designer Weaves, is made from the cocoons of caterpillars who have completed the moth stage and flown away.
Satin, rayon, polyester
Depending on how much you want to spend, you have two alternatives.
1) Wild silk or Ahimsa silk. This is a true silk, but it is made from the cocoons left over after the wild silkworms have exited - therefore no silkworms are harmed in harvesting the cocoons. Due to the harvesting process and the nature of the cocoons, however, this kind of silk is very expensive.
2) Artificial silk - rayon is the best choice here as it is the most like true silk in its properties. It is also much cheaper than wild silk or cultivated silk.
All of the previous answers pretty much cover it.
I just had to add, though, that this dress is BEAUTIFUL! What occasion will you be using it for?
There's a socially conscious choice: fabric made from bamboo
There is new "Micro" fibers out now that look & feel like silk. Your vendor probably has a better line on such than I do.
Lovely dress..
Felicitations.
Silkemp is a silk like material made from hemp. Plus it is 100% natural and therefore vegan. You can't tell the difference, some of it even has the watermark if you want that. It also drapes like silk as well as feels like it. It never wrinkles and can be washed on gentle cycle without wrinkling.
Everyone pretty much already answered your question, I just want to say that that is a gorgeous dress!
I would recommend bamboo...........It is very soft and much like silk.
