I need a good recipe that has peas in it?!


Question: I've had a bag of frozen peas that I bought on impulse and haven't used yet. What is a great recipe you'd reccomend, that you've actually tried? Please no dairy or eggs.

Rice and peas!

I love the way those fresh frozen peas pop when you eat them in rice. Add them in right at the end so they only just thaw out and warm up.

I would use some Indian or Middle East flavourings for the recipe. Something spicy but mostly aromatic. Cardamon, ginger, that kind of thing.

OK how many people are going to suggest chicken to a question asked in the veggie and vegan forum and where the question asked for no dairy or eggs. D'OH!!!!

My grandmother use to make a pea salad but I can't remember what all she put in it.

Peas and chocolate pudding. Just heat up the peas and once they are cooked just stir the peas in with the pudding... YUM

How about peas just being your side dish? That would seem easier to me.

Naked Chef's Crowder Peas


INGREDIENTS
4 slices bacon
1 small onion, chopped
1 small green bell pepper, chopped
1 (16 ounce) package frozen crowder peas
2 cups water
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 pinch dried thyme
1 crushed bay leaf
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt to taste
2 slices cooked ham, cubed
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley


DIRECTIONS
Place bacon in a skillet over medium-high heat, and cook until evenly brown. Drain and crumble. Mix onion and green bell pepper into the skillet, and cook until tender. Stir in peas and water. Season with garlic powder, thyme, bay leaf, and seasoned salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer 30 to 40 minutes, until peas are tender.
Mix ham into the skillet. Adjust seasonings to taste. Continue cooking 5 minutes. Stir in fresh parsley just before serving.

SHEPHERDS PIE!

OK, it does not have peas in this particular recipe, but in the UK, I have had such pies with a mix of veggies including peas.

You can google for other type of savory pie recipes. It also does not hurt to make your own creation with peas. Pea soup for instance.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb. lamb, minced
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 large carrot, diced
1 beef stock cube
1 lb. chopped tomatoes
1 tablespoon corn flour
3 tablespoons tomato puree
pinch of salt and pepper
2 lb. potatoes
1 stick butter

If you add peas it will no longer be a good recipe.They taste like crap.

ummm, she's asking in vegan category, I'm pretty sure chicken dishes are out. If you go to food network, under tyler (forgot his last name), I saw him cook a wonderful side dish using peas....

maybe search through his recipes...sorry I couldn't be more help.

mashed potatoes and peas with quorn and gravy. (peas are very good for you as none of the vitamins come out whilst cooking as they are only in the pan for 2 mins)

well, you could take a couple of cans of chicken broth and a couple of Chicken breasts, boil them, then tear them up into little pieces. Then add the peas along with potato's and carrots, corn and green beans, and you have a yummy chicken soup, you can always add a bit of celery for flavor and onions too . I usually salt and pepper each chicken breast before I boil it then add poultry seasoning also. Also, when you add the 2 cans of chkn(chicken) broth also add 2 or 3 cans of water. I usually use 3. and also you can add 2 cups of egg noodles for come yummy chicken and noodle soup!

How about rice pilaf? Make some rice, substitute some olive oil for the butter and add your peas along with some sliced almonds.

Cook the rice in a seperate pot. In a frying pan, heat two tablespoons of olive oil and toast your almonds, then add your peas and heat them through. Remove from heat and toss with your rice.

I make a pasta with frozen peas. It does have parmesan cheese, but I think you can omit that. You need:

box of pasta shells (the small ones)
frozen peas
a medium onion
olive oil
salt and pepper to taste

Sautee the onion until clear, add salt, pepper, and peas. Cook until peas are tender. Serve over pasta. It's really quick and easy, the cheese makes everything stick together, but I'm not sure if there is a veggie substitute for parmesan cheese. If so, add it when you add the peas. =)

Vegan Split Pea Soup

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
1 bay leaf
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups dried split peas
1/2 cup barley
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
7 1/2 cups water
3 carrots, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
3 potatoes, diced
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper


In a large pot over medium high heat, saute the oil, onion, bay leaf and garlic for 5 minutes, or until onions are translucent. Add the peas, barley, salt and water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Add the carrots, celery, potatoes, parsley, basil, thyme and ground black pepper. Simmer for another hour, or until the peas and vegetables are tender.

The only one I have is Pea salad but that has dairy and eggs in it. So sorry. I can give it to you anyways and maybe you know how to substitute other things for the dairy and eggs.

Boil the peas until desired tenderness
Drain. Mix with Real Mayo (theres your egg problem)
And Cheese crumbles.

I don't know if you could substitute the real mayo for something else or if maybe there is a substitute for cheese.


Look people is it really neccesary to give me a thumbs down. I'm not a vegan but most know what to substitute for the dairy and eggs and I don't. I just thought if you had the recipe you could find something tasty to substitute in and make your own recipe for it. Excuse me for trying to be nice!

2 medium potatos ,.1 stalk of celery, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 medium onions. 2 cups of milk. salt and pepper to taste. Fry onions when transparent add garlic. When garlic is caramelized take off the pan and put aside. Cut potatos in quarters and boil togetther with peas. When potatos are tender, drain pot. Add 2 cups of milk , onions and garlic and potatos in a blender and puree. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can do the same thing with all kinds of vegetables. Ahappy cooking

In a kettle of salted boiling water cook the pasta until it is tender, in a colander rinse it well, and drain it. In the bowl toss the pasta with the dressing, add the peas, the tomatoes, and the basil, and toss the salad well.

Serves 10 to 12.

comments: this salad is super easy and has a pretty good subtle flavor. i added some diced red peppers as a sweet and crunchy addition. i also added the juice of half a lime because i thought it needed a little more acidity. i think i might have messed up on getting my emulsion right. i think i added the oil too quickly so it didn’t emulsify properly but it still tasted fine so it’s okay. the fresh basil works really well in completing this dish. this is another salad where you can add just about anything you like. sun-dried tomatoes, corn, some cilantro all would be great.

Try looking for chinese receipes, I hate peas but I'll eat them in Chinese dishes.

I hate peas. I only use it for my fried rice. I make some rice and let it sit overnight. The next day I fry it with the peas, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, garlic, soy sauce, tofu (sometimes), and carrots. I use olive oil for the oil instead of vegetable oil but do what is comfortable for you. I think I got the fried rice recipe from vegweb.com some time ago but I could be mistaken.

I hate peas.
