Why are teachers indoctrinating milk consumption into our kids?!

Ok - I'm not a vegan but I just don't see the health benefits of milk. From what I've seen it makes you fat and causes acne and I won't let my kids drink it. Most cultures don't consume unfermented milk and only recently did this "three glasses a day" business come into play. Not to mention the wide prevalance of lactose intolerance. I know I wouldn't want my future children being brainwashed into drinking milk even if they have to down pills to keep it from hurting their tummies (which they probably will considering they would have lactose intolerant parents). Why don't schools realize that some people have moral objections to milk and many people, especially those of ethnicities other than northern european, cannot even drink it?
Answers: This is ridiculous:

Because the nutrition information and all the teaching materials are typically provided by the dairy industry. I grew up in California in the 80s and we had a whole program called "Nutrition with Nelson," which I only recently did a little research on. It's propaganda from the California Dairy Council, so of course it's biased towards dairy products. The problem is that teachers don't necessarily have any knowledge whatsoever about nutrition; it's not like it's required study in college. And schools are strapped for cash so they are not going to go out and source unbiased textbooks to teach nutrition to the kids when someone (the dairy folks) is kindly offering to provide them with DVDs, workbooks, coloring books, and all kinds of other "educational" materials. Conscientious parents need to start making noise at their kids' schools and asking them to reject propoganda from the dairy councils in favor of real education.
Teachers teach this for the same reason they teach everything else these days: state guidelines.
I agree that milk has a more positive image than it deserves, but teachers are not coming up with this on their own.
Reasons? I'll guess dairy lobby and inertia.
You know how there's all this crap in the school food lunches? There are two reasons: First, the USDA buys up surplus meat, dairy, and eggs, and dumps it in the school lunch system. Lobbyists pressure the hell out of Congress to keep them from allowing nondairy products to be substituted as a calcium source in subsidized school lunches. And I get the feeling that many kids receiving subsidized lunches are members of groups that tend to be lactose intolerance--i.e., nonwhites. Second, a number of junk food purveyors and fast food companies have bought entree into school systems. Why? Because many people vote against tax hikes that would be used to fund schools.
In short: Teachers don't have a hell of a lot of nutritional education (nor do most doctors, by the way), and they are paid/strong-armed to indoctrinate the kids. You might want to read "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser and "Don't Eat This Book" by Morgan Spurlock. And if you haven't seen "Supersize Me," you probably should. This will give you insight into what the hell is wrong with our school system and make me glad I never had children.
The least they could do, if they're going to extoll the virtues of milk, is explain how the cow is treated. It's sad that they spend so much time discussing what industrial processes the milk goes through after it is out of the cow, but not one word on what happens BEFORE the milk comes out of the cow. Or hamburgers for that matter. Kids deserve to know.
Calcium... strong teeth and bones.. blah blah blah. I, personally, don't like the mess. I might drink 5 gallons a year, and that because I like cereal and milk in my coffee
i'm not completely sure. but i think the schools are paid to put up got milk? advertisements, so the kids at the school see it. they say "studies have shown that milk actually helps in weight loss" and blah blah blah. but notice how those studies are not actually shown to the public and they expect you to just believe it. who has actually seen these studies? besides, you should also note that they are conducted by the milk advertising companies. i agree with you. some people do not feel milk is right, nor is it necessary. it is meant for calves, not humans. I'm not a vegan, either, but it is still true. and annoying
Teachers don't have any control over the Food Service in Schools... the Local School Board & Dieticians control that...
Nutritional information that is taught in school, especially in Primary & Secondary Schools, is content that is not decided on by the teachers. They are presented with information approved by the state & school board that they pass on to our children.
The education system is blatantly racist and shamelessly sold to industry.
This drives me crazy, too. I am a vegan, and my 3 year old daughter is a vegetarian, though my family thinks it's hilarious to give her meat. Grr. She usually spits it out, anyway. She drinks organic milk and soy milk. I give her the option. I have always hated drinking milk, and remember being forced to drink it in school. Yuck. I plan on packing my daughter's lunch when she goes to school, and encourage all of you to do the same--the school lunches are disgusting and totally unhealthy.
This would be a good chance for you to educate your own kids. Explain to them the reasons you do not want them to drink milk, and explain to them that sometimes they need to approach what they learn at school with a critical attitude.
It is what they are told to teach and they can't really control it because they have to. They realize that not all people drink milk and they sometimes say the other ways to get calcium such as vitamins as well and there is more than one kind of milk such as skim milk. But everyone is allergic to something and sometimes milk can have bad points and other things as well. Usually instead of having milk in the morning the child would have juice with added calcium.
The local dairy groups give money to schools. That's how it works. We would do the Milk Run. Run then get free milk. Our whole food recommended daily intake posters etc. are made by the meat and dairy council. Money and politics. Businesses put money into the pockets of politicians and the politicians say a lot of bullsh*t.
Milk is still the best source ounce for ounce for "usable" or "absorbable" calcium. Until a better source is found ... drink milk.
i think scocasso got it but the money is given to the teacher's union instead of the school. The union needs it when they go on strike for more money.
Public schools are funded by the government.
The governmnet, of course, is in bed with meat and dairy industries, pharmaceutical industries, insurance companies, credit card companies, and basically any other massive multi-billion dollar corporation that makes money by preying off Americans who don't make an effort to educate themselves.
Only someone very foolish and bizarre (not the asker) would see this as some sort of conspiracy. How silly!
You can't controvert the findings of science. Milk has the most calcium the body can use.
Schools teach the predominating "morals" in a given society. In modern Western culture ... that means "3 glasses of milk a day." So any morality apart from the "norm" is the responsibility of the parents. Think of it . . . I'm sure orthodox Jews would rather not have pork touted in nutrition classes or served in the cafeteria.
I would disagree that "many people" of other ethnic origins can't drink it. At least that has been my experience in my travels in Asia, Africa, Middle East, and remote areas. "Milk" of some sort ... from animals . . . is pretty universal.
HOWEVER, I do think that alternatives should be at least mentioned t, especially because of the prevalence of lactose intolerance.
Sigh. So you want your future children brainwashed into avoiding milk? What makes your opinion better? Milk does not make you fat, excess calories make you fat. In fact, studies show that milk helps with weight loss. Milk does not cause acne, an excess production of oil combined with bacteria cause acne. Many cultures consume milk. Some people are lactose intolerant, but others aren't. While some people have moral objections to milk, the vast majority of people don't. Frankly, if you're not a vegan, then you're consuming animal products, so why get on your high horse about how nutrition is taught in schools?
