Where (in the UK) can I buy vegetarian jelly or jelly crystals to make a trifle?!

Question: I used to make trifles regularly, but since discovering what gelatine is made from (ugh) I've stopped.
My son has requested a trifle over Christmas.
Can anyone tell me where I can buy non animal substitute to gelatine?

I buy Hartley's Quickset Jelly from Tesco's. It comes in a packet and is available in orange, raspberry or strawberry flavour. It has no gelatine in it and,as confirmed on the packet, is suitable for vegetarians. It tastes very nice and would be ideal for a trifle.

Any good health/whole food shop, try Barrett's Health Foods on any high street

Holland and Barrat should have everything you need.

any supermarket

edit: everyone loves my trifle, i have vegetarians in the family and don't use jelly. Swiss roll for base, sherry optional, juice from tin of strawberries, then the strawberries (my daughter doesn't like big pieces so i blend it for her) custard, whipping cream, cherries on top. really easy, and delicious.

you might need to go to a shop instead of looking on the net.

I have bought it from Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Lidl and the local corner shop, so you really shouldn't have any trouble finding it. Try asking for 'Quick Gel', which is one brand name, although it doesn't make a big thing of being veggie, it is! But there are plenty to choose from. Bird's Eye Trifle mixes include a sachet of vegetarian jelly. Most (or maybe all) powdered jellys are vegetarian. Some don't set quite as firm as gelatine based jelly, but a bit of trial and error and you will suss them out.
Good luck =)

Look for "agar-agar", "carageenan" it's made from seaweed/kelp or "guar gum". You can find it in tesco in the baking section or an asian food store.

I've seen Supercook Vege-gel in Tesco's on the home baking shelf with other SuperCook items. There are instructions and recipe ideas in the pack.

I use AGAR flakes. Agar is a kind of sea plant. My local H&B doesn't stock it, either. Luckily, we've got an independent health food shop here and that's the only place I can get agar.

My local Sainsbury's actually stock something called Veggie Gel by Super Cook. Here's what it looks like. http://www.supercook.co.uk/products/gela...

I personally prefer Agar because Super Cook's veggie gel tends to make the gel tough.

Best of luck.

i dont know much but go to london

there are loads of indians living there with a vegetarian cultural backround
you should investigate before going there if it is too far

Independent High Street Health Food shops should do it, or the supermarkets. Or delis. I have seen it in co-op.
