You're probably getting most of your excess calories from dairy: cheese and milk products. Substitute them with other protein sources: tofu, 'fake' meat products, fish or what your vegetarian practice allows. Eat smaller portions--eating five times a day, but eating no more than what you can hold in one hand will go a long way. Eat so you're not hungry, not so you feel full.

It truly is as simple as eat less (calories) and exercise more of course saying it is much easier then doing it.
For starters begin a food journal.
For 1 week do not change how you have been eating and write every single thing you consume down.
This way you have a starting point and you can see what changes you need to make.
Then make a few changes at a time. Crash diets only work for short periods if they work at all.
Start an exercise program such as walking 3x a week
Make it something that you like to do if possible you'll have a better chance to stick with it.
Make sure you drink lots of water.
Have 3 cups of herbal tea (green tea is good) a day
and eat 3 servings of fruit and 4 servings of fresh veggies preferably raw.
I try to focus on these and it has been working for me. My 1st focus is my exercise this works better for me so I'm not thinking about food constantly.

you need to get a bit more active, there are online diet sites a good one I like is myplate.com.
Also, if you are drinking your calories in coffee or sodas or juices you need to cut that out.
If you eat filling foods such as bananas, oats,brown rice and pasta you'll be less inclined to eat more.
I heard once about drinking water if you feel hungry 'cos it may be thirst that your body has not hunger?
