Is epinephrine an animal by-product?!


Question: I am planning to go vegetarian (eating only eggs from a local farm were i work, where i KNOW the chickens are healthy and happy) anyways i have a deadly tree nut allergy (cashews, almonds ect) and heard somewhere that epinephrine is collected from animals adrenaline glad. Is this true?

I also would like to know what i can do to meet the recommended proteins and such that i will need... I now i need to take calcium pills and vitamins already but is there anything else? I enjoy eating tofu and such :)

Also im a very active teen so is there any extra things i should eat/drink to stay healthy?

Not sure where Emmah gets her information from; I went vegetarian in 1969 at the age of 16 and have never suffered from anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, sickliness, frailty or alopecia.

Just make sure you're getting a balanced diet, which is not the time-consuming rocket science that many omnivores would have you believe.

I completely agree with Meg about your medication; your life and your health come first.

I am vegan; I have been and am obliged to take life-saving medication which has been animal tested; I have been called a hypocrite, dishonest and a fair-weather, sometimes, convenient vegan by 'Flexitarian Vegan' and 'FlexiVegan' on this forum. No. Epinephrine is found naturally inside the human body, but has been synthesized (not harvested) since 1904.
If you plan on being vegetarian, but not vegan, you should drink milk - calcium is VERY hard to absorb from pretty much anything but dairy. Also try to drink soy stuff, tofu is very good for protein. Most soy products (soy beans, soy milk, etc) are very good for you as well.

Whether or not epinephrine is derived from animals is immaterial. Unless of course you would rather risk your life if you have an allergic reaction. You will need to keep your EpiPen handy in case you inadvertently come in contact with nuts. You know that could result in death unless you administer and antihistamine ... i.e. epinephrine.

A teenager should not be making these kinds of decisions. You will be fine for several years until you start to notice your hair falling out. By then your B9/B12 deficiencies will have made you anemic and you will be frail and sickly. Eating eggs is a good choice, but what is wrong with fish? They are sooooo super good for you, better than any vegetarian diet. Soy was actually implicated in a leukemia study. Epinephrine is a hormone produced by the body. It can be synthesized in a lab, from what, chemical compounds. It is likely that other things you will take, for instance the vitamins, if they are actually any good, will probably be made from processed animal livers, kidneys, etc. There is no way to eliminate all of the animal products from your life. Be happy to have made a choice to eat healthy things and be sure to include fresh produce, organic is usually better, as well as various grains. You shouldn't be deficient if you remain eating eggs and fish along with enough grains and veggies. Make sure you consult a licensed nutritionist about once a year to make sure your diet is sufficient.
