Which breads are vegan?!
Answers: most breads either have egg or honey or whey in them, or they have a warning such as "may contain traces of milk and or egg"...is it vegan-friendly to eat these breads(and other foods) that have a warning like that but don't have the actual ingredient you're avoiding in the ingredients list?
if you are interested in good bread that you know has only vegetarian ingredients in it, get a bread machine. they are wonderful. you control what goes in and what doesn't. the only ingredents are flour, water and yeast. you can add any kinds of goodies like raisins, cheese, shredded veggies etc. last night i made bread with oatmeal (i like the oatmeal in packets with dates or brown sugar) raisins, and cinnamon. so good. i have used apples, bananas, any dried fruit or spice.
the bread is so delicious and smells heavenly.
not much work-put in ingredients, make sure the dough is the right consistancy, walk away for three hours. when done, the machine beeps and you have wonderful bread to eat. you have a choice of crust color and type of bread made (gluten free
, french, white...) you can also set the timing on delay so it begins the process later so when you come home the bread is done and waiting for you. many many options.
some new bread machines will make jam, cake, all kinds of special things.
doesn' cost too much and is a vital investment. use mine ALL the time.
i think some brands of pita bread are
Ezekiel 4:9 bread boats to be a complete source of protein, and is made of only sprouted grain (no flour).]
EDIT: You can find Ezekiel 4:9 in the freezers of stores like Jewel-Osco and Dominick's, not to mention Whole Foods or Trader Joe's (you can buy it fresh at TJ's). It's pretty common.
DO NOT EAT IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Common brands...
I think there are no national brands other than Wonder etc.
Around where I live, Silver Hills if very common in the big super markets. But usually I get bread from the local health food store -- all kinds of organic breads... none have any animal products. No *real* bread contains weird things like eggs etc. or all those diglicerides etc. I used to have a bakery... It should say something like this: "organic whole grain wheat flour, pure filtered water, Utah ancient sea salt. Naturally leavened." If it doesn't say something like that, then it's just going to be mock bread.
You don't want to know the HUGE list of ingredients that can be used in the bakery industry... and not one ingredient is natural at the common bakeries. Then there are all of the hidden ingredients. You don't want to know about that either. The ingredient list on food products is totally designed and regulated to allow manufacturers to put almost anything they want in there as long as it doesn't immediately kill you or make you very ill -- immediately. Sure, over the long-term, it is allowed to slowly kill you, that's okay. We still use rust for the colour red and orange. Rust. That is just the tip of the iceberg.
