Is anyone else irritated by the term 'vegetarian'?!
give themselves a label.
Answers: I mean why can't they say that they don't eat meat rather than
give themselves a label.
No. I find it rather funny when the rabid vegetarians try to constrict the meaning to what they say it is. Someone said to a person who commented that vegetarians can also be those who eat fish, "You don't have any authority" to call themselves vegetarians. I think that is hilarious. As if "authority" like some half-baked "society" is needed to define a word,,,,LOL
everything has a label. thats called language. i'm just irrtated by vegetarians
cuz thats what theyre called, theres a label for everything, like it or not.
Well it`s a word...you need words to define stuff don`t u?I like the word "vegan" rather then a vegetarian.
IMO, this is the start of a vegetarian bashing. And in the Vegan/Vegetarian category! This is suppose to be an exchange of questions and answers, not a session of bashing.
Yes kinda is irritating, and is not healthy actually, my Wife comes from the Philippines they are vegetarians not by choice but because it takes all their money just to get rice and veggies, they consider it a real treat when have meats such as chicken goat pig beef etc,,, certainly I would agree pork ins't real healthy unless is the leaner parts, but they lack protien there many loose their teeth at a very very young age simply cause of lack of protien, they are to skinny to a point alot look unhealthy, I make sure my wife eats leans good meats everyday even giveing her milk every evening she loves, she looks far more beautiful now and all her family want to know what is she doing to have such good skin now haha.If you do not want to eat meats get some whey Protien and take a few scoops a day with water or whatever beverage you prefer, I once was a vegetarian for 2 years was a mistake to do that but there are lots of good foods even fake soy meats hottdogs burgers etc, I did it for weight loss but wasn't the answer.I expected to get some thumbs down certainly from real vegetarians, some refuse to eat any kinda animal and I can respect that maybe you feel is against God or something, but thats all cool, are plenty of other sorces for protien like soy meats, beans which are not a complete sorce of protien but cant hurt maybe fish if you are ok with that Jesus was a fisherman ya know, nuts have loads of protien I would never tell a vegetarian to eat meats only try to advise they are missing some important nutriants we need to be very healthy. so very sorry if i offended anyone, as far as the word Vegetarian isn't anything wrong with it at all just represents your preferance so be proud.
Commonly people do not appreciate those values. But we are still living with harmonious community. I'm a vegan.
In a day, at least 5-6 of them anxious to see a vegetarian (but never heard the term vegan), often they are the same damn people teasing me, make fun of me in the public like...hi "veggie"..."those beasts are created for us"...etc. But I just quite, calm, and often smile at them. But you know, I feel pity for them for never been told "why" vegetarianism. Sometimes the opportunity arises in bloom moon to tell "someone closest" about the truth. Take this as example...
My boss suggested me to have an aquarium at visitors lobby. But I told him "Sir, I feel wrong to captivate or imprison them". Hearing that my boss replied "Hey, I"M DISAPPOINTED, I HATE YOUR PHILOSOPHY", then he just walked away. I think he felt insulted. But, you know what happened on the next day? He even removed the fish tank from his office.
***(For your info, I'm a prison officer and counselor. He is my Superintendent. We only imprison and punish those offenders, not the innocents).
Listen ...in a day a lot of them cross the border, viewed peculiarly while we are eating. But not all of them I confronted why should they become a vegetarian. I ever seen gallows and canning. But I always plea to god to "speak out" for humane kind and innocent animals.
lol. well, they could just call themselves herbavores...since it's already a term used in science.
I think it is easier when they(we) are out or eatting in someones home. But since there are 1/2 dozen of more variations I'm not sure really it works.
I find I don't fit any of the classic "labels" myself so do understand what you are saying.
Slainté(to your health)
Yes. They use that term in their attempts to try to make themselves appear to be morally superior to those of us who eat a balanced diet including meat. God said we can eat meat, and since God defined morality those veggie people are a joke with their arrogance.
Well people get confused when you just say "I don't eat meat" they follow that with "but do you eat chicken" and "how about fish" and "the soup doesn't have any meat in it it's just broth"
It is less words to just say vegetarian.
To me being vegetarian is much more then just not eating meat. I also do not wear their skin or buy any products that animals had to die or suffer to make or produce or test. To me being a vegetarian is a life choice not just a diet choice.
well..........wouldn't it be better to say-" i'm a vegetarian " rather than saying-" i'm a non-meat eater "?? lol
1 word for 2. "Vegetarian" simply means " no meat, " . What else would you like to call it.
I also think that since it is quite a different diet choice it does need a separate name.
It's just a word that is understood differently in different places. To me it is one whose diet is primarily plant-based by choice or happenstance. That's the way most of the world understands it. In the western world it is more politically loaded--inaccurate to be sure, but that's the reality.
I'll begin with a disclaimer - I'm not vegetarian. I'm an omnivore.
For one, because vegetarians don't just 'not eat meat.' Can you imagine how complex it would be to start listing everything that contains dead animal parts in it?
I don't eat gelatine, lard, tallow, suet, isinglass, cochineal, rennet, pepsin, shellac, meat, seafood, glucosamine...
Since choosing not to eat meat for ethical reasons is more akin to religion or spirituality, I don't see anything wrong with having a label. Environmentalists have a label; nudists have a label. You could just as easily replace those with "I don't drive gas-powered cars, throw things away, etc." and "I don't wear clothes," but the beliefs are more than that.
What I'm curious about is why someone else's label would irritate you? I'm sure you have your own labels you use - your religious affiliation, your job - which have a host of connotations with it. Why does one group's - vegetarianism - upset you?
That's the nature of language. If there is a concept such as "not eating meat" a word will be coined to describe it. Why do people call themselves Christian; why don't they just tell everyone that Jesus Christ is their personal savior? Why do people call themselves married; why don't they just say "I have entered a legal arrangement with a person of the opposite sex for the purposes of companionship and procreation"? [Note: this is in no way MY defintion of marriage, but it's wordy enough to make the point.] Why do people call themselves attorneys when they could just say they practice law professionally. Do all these labels bother you, too?
As a point of fact, sometimes I DO just say I don't eat meat. Other times I "label" myself. I don't do it to irritate you.
I'm eating too much delicious bacon to be concerned with labels.
Most vegetarians are motivated my the well-being of others unlike the majority of mankind.
Compassion vs. the lack of it.
This does not apply to all vegetarians but it is required to be called vegan.
The word "vegetarian" has a solid definition. Other neoligisms that have been introduced are weak and require absolutely no commitment.
if you are going to live by the Golden Rule, don't try to insert words or phrases. This isn't Animal Farm.
You know if I tell someone "Sorry...I dont eat meat." They are a lot my receptive than if I tell them "Sorry...Im a vegetarian." Its as though i am insulting them with the word. I would much rather say that I dont eat meat!
i have no idea. i guess vegetarian sounds cooler and they want to sound smart. i dont eat meat. i usually say im a vegeatrian. its a conversation starter.
^_^
it's like a "badge of honor" (in their minds anyway) because itgives a false sense of superiority over everybody who is not.. Besides why do the latest "cool fad" if nobody notices??
petty labelling (with strict "rules" no less) does not irritate me.. I find it pathetic more than anything else...
