Do vegans keep pet birds?!
Answers: Just wondering....it seems cruel to me to keep birds caged even though I am not vegan/vegetarian.
Vegan, vegetarian or not - I agree, it's cruel to keep birds caged and there's no way I could ever, ever keep one. Birds need more that a tiny cage.
Some do. Some don't.
I'm vegan and I don't have any pets, but I would like to get a cat once I live in a bigger place, I feel crowded enough with three people in my home as it is. I wouldn't keep a caged bird, period...
Actually, a bird in a cage is probably happier than one outside of one. A bird in a cage doesn't need to worry about where its next meal is coming from, or whether it's going to get eaten. A bird in a cage not only does not have to worry, but gets to play with toys and mirrors (if provided), an experience it would never get to enjoy in the wild.
I'm a vegetarian very into animal rights, but I do keep pet birds.
I don't think this is cruel. I usually keep the door of their cage open so they can come out if they want to. Usually, birds are pretty territorial and like to stay in the cage, but come out to explore and keep entertained. I never found this really cruel (my dad thinks it is), but a great relationship. My cockatiel loves humans anyway, and spends most of her time outside the cage sitting with people and wanting to be petted and scratched.
My parakeets, I keep two together, because not all parakeets really like people that much. They keep eachother company and stay in teh cage mostly but do come out to forage or get some exercise.
There is no way that someone could buy one from a pet store or breeder and call him or herself vegan.
I suppose it would be acceptable to rescue one from a non-profit or an abusive home.
To me ( a vegetarian), keeping a bird in a cage is wrong, and keeping any exotic animal in a house instead of the wild is wrong. I think vegans would probably agree considering V&V's are against animals used for entertainment... and this seems to me to be a form of that. Birds aren't supposed to be companion animals like cats and dogs, although they are very intellegent! If someone is going to have a bird they should have an aviary (sp?). I doubt many begans have birds in cages. That would be quite hypocritical!
I have yellow and pink lovebird I bought off a street vendor in China and I thought I would release it as soon as I got it but I realized most birds are born in a cage and would die as soon as they were released.
I think that even though I am all for animal rights I dont want to set a bird free just to be afraid it was caught and given to a bad home where it would die from bad treatment or be set free and have it die because it could not live outside the cage.
It's like, keeping a dog in your house... or a child in your power? I don't have any birds anyway, and don't plan on getting any anytime soon. Some people have birds but don't cage them. Also, there was this one lady on TV who had over 1000 birds, but she really loved them. (they were caged by the way)
As a vegan i would only have or look after a rescued animal whos life would be a lot worce or non existent if it was not for someone giveing it a home i would never put one in captivity. but most birds you can not release or keep without a cage without them dieing
If the bird was rescued and had lots of freedom outside the cage then I don't think it is cruel, the same with snakes. But to go purchase one is just not right.
Some vegans do because a lot of times vegan and vegetarian things just have something to do with diet. Not all pet birds are kept in cages though some stay in certain other areas.
I wouldn't. To me keeping pets seems inhumane unless they have LOTS of space... like a really big house for a cat, maybe. But birds in cages, hells no..
of course. i'm a vegetarian, and i have a pet bird. but he's out of his cage for a few hours a day, and he has lots of toys and entertainment to play with when i can't play with him.
