HELP! I'm a vegetarian, so what foods can I eat?!

Question: Sounds like a dumb question, but there are hidden animal products in food afraid and I'm not sure what foods I CAN eat. So, if anyone can tell me I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

I offer points, and best answer!!! WOO WOO!!!

When I decided to make the switch and become a vegetarian 3 years ago I did it with the help of suggestions from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). They have a beginners guide to vegetarianism that you can have sent to you free in the mail, it's very helpful. Also weekly they will send you, if you want, recipes to your email that are not only vegetarian but also Vegan. It's not easy being a vegetarian at first, but once you get the hang of what you "can" eat it's a great way to live.
Don't be shy asking restaurants what is in their foods (sauces included!). Salads sometimes have bacon hidden in them. However, some restaurants use bacon bits, which if you press for details you will find out that usually they are SOY bacon "flavored" bits and are actually meat free. You just need to ask. If you think they're lying or don't know, you can ask to see labels (they will show you believe it or not), or just opt for something on the menu thats not questionable.
If you're going Vegan (no animal products at all, including dairy, egg, etc) it's much stricter but again, PETA is a great resource.
There's not much point in me writing a list of what you "can" and "can't" eat, since both lists go on and on, so it is something you will have to discover for yourself. See what you like, play around, and have fun.
My husband eats a lot of meat and I eat none, so my idea of vegetarian cooking isn't making an entirely different meal then the rest of the families just for it, it is making something that will satisfy my dietary choices and his hunger. Other times I will make a rice or pasta dish up until the point when I throw meat in. I will then split the meal into two pans, one for me with extra veggys or tofu, one for him with beef (puke!).
Congratulations on making the switch away from meat :)

are you vegetarian or vegan? I think animal byproducts is allowed by vegetarians.

just read the ingredints lable before you eat it ps why are you a vegterian meat is so deliesouce

You can eat anything you want. Vegetarians choose not to eat animal products.

You should decide what you're okay with, THEN find a label for it. Not pick a label then change yourself to fit it.

Any type or vegtible or fruit. Only depends what you think. Eggs and milk. Do you mind if they were never living, or do you not? And also, there are some web-sites where you can order fake meat. Super helpful :]

these people are losers just find some things u can live without like coffee/some alohol etc although lots f things have animal products it's better to eat that than actual meat good luck stranger ;)

u can eat salads, different kind of veggies in different forms like sometimes stir fried and with ur fav sauce, sometimes mixed with rice and can make good pilaf, lentils are good if u like spicy food then try to add indian spices with boiled lentils like cajanus, split moong, red kidney beans, garbanzo beans.indian food gives u aidea of lots of spices like red chilli flakes, coriander powder, cumin powder, etc etc.u can eat lentile with rice and chapati.chapati can be of whole gain wheat flour.all the fruits u can eat.i am vegetarian but i eat yoghurt, milk, cheese and egg.so i eat veg pizzas and i love broccoli pizza.u can try for that.i make vegetable kababs, cutlets, pancakes of gram flour mixed with spices and onions etc etc.u can get kulfi style icecreams and traditional sweets like baklava, gulabjamun etc etc.unfermented cheese called paneer u can try which tastes yummy with peas and tomato curry.i sometimes make gravies with cashewnuts ,coconut, and peanuts for vegetables.i hope it will help.

it is! eat anything you want -just make sure to get enough protein. this can be found in milk & soy products, beans, and nuts. see a nutritionist or take some cooking classes for more healthy ideas.

If you are vegan, you'll have to pay lots of attention and be a careful label reader. For instance, many Thai dishes include fish sauce as a seasoning. Many foods contain milk products, even whey. Watch the labels for items such as powdered eggs. You will be able to eat any fruit, veggie or grain and use any herb or spice. Breads can be readily made with neither milk nor eggs, but watch out for other baked goods. As a vegan you will have to be especially careful to get enough complete protein. This can be done by consuming a variety of whole grains, dried beans, nuts and seeds throughout the day. Soy provides a complete protein and comes in many forms including cheese and meat versions which you may want to try. A lot can be learned by cooking for oneself using vegan/vegetarian recipes found on the web. If though, you are an ovo-lacto vegetarian, you will find the way much easier because you can eat all sorts of dishes which include eggs and/or cheeses.

Don't become something because it's popular, become something because you're informed & believe your choice is best for you.If you were truly informed.....you wouldn't be asking this question.....you'd already know. Waste of time.

just read the lables on foods.
eat vegetables, make your own pasta sauce with veggie ground "meat", buy non-egg made pasta if you're a vegan, you can eat eggs if you're not vegan, and there's such thing as vegetarian ham slices/turkey slices for sandwiches, eat healthy bread with flax seeds and other seeds.
eat tofu, beans, lentils, vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, breads and drink milk or soymilk, eat cheese and so on
if you make chili, put in some extra beans, and get some veggie ground "beef"
make a stirfry, cube up some tofu and put it in,
like I said, read lables!! :)

Try keeping away from margarines that contain Emulsifiers, ans these can come from animal sources. Again, gelatine, and i suggest you look at the lables of things. These will tell you if they are vegetairian. I would also suggest you get in touch with the Vegetarian society in London.

Good luck!

I really advise Yahoo to create a vegetarian section under "Food & Drink".

Cows are vegetarians too, so go have a burger.

whatever tastes/looks like meat, don't eat it
