Is the ingredient "potassium metabisulfite" safe to consume?!

Question: this stuff is listed on my white grape juice bottle as a preserver of "freshness and flavor".
just want to know if it is safe, natural, and where it comes from.
thanks!

Dear Jonny D,

What are sulfites, and why do all American wines seem to have them, and should I let this bother me?...

I am allergic to metabisulfite but some people are fine with it.

It's added to prevent the growth of bacteria...Here's some more info on it...

I hope that helps!

I am a former chef and now a vegetarian, like nitrogen in potato chip bags the bottles are sprayed with this to prevent when in transport and the varying temp change of the sugars in the juice converting to alcohol and either fermenting or going moldy, plus most grape in the growing process have it sprayed on in the field for the same reason.

The moisture on the skins of the grape can if not treated do the same thing on the vine, unless it is for a wine like Ice wine or the German auslese or spatlese, were they allow the grape to dry and mold for then the frozen grapes when picked have concentrate flaour and give only a thimble of juice then, if you have allegies like the first lady it is advisable to look for an organic or sulfate free variety at a health food or natural food store.

It is a preservative designed to stop bacteria from growing. It is not natural. It has been approved by the FDA as safe.
