Vegetarian queastion here!?!
Answers: I recently watched the video "meet your meat" and it made me cry, I never knew that just drdinking milk or eating eggs would still cause such a problem to animals still. Is soy milk a good substitute for milk? and I'm curious to how it's different than regular milk.
Soy milk is horrid. Some people actually like it, but I can't imagine how. It's like putting soya sauce on your cereal. The only thing you can do is get some and try it. You could also try rice milk and almond milk. They're common dairy substitutes. Are they good subsitutes? They're not milk, but they also don't involve animal suffering- so in that respect they're good. They're different that cow's milk because they don't come from an animal. Soy milk comes from soy beans, rice milk from rice and almond milk from almonds.
I cried for days after watching the Meet Your Meat video.
I tried and didn't like.
Then researched goat milk and happy with the way goats are treated (at least Meyerburg Farms) tried and really is superb.
I'd suggest goat milk. But you'd have to be happy about that.
It has just the same protein, the difference is it's made from a type of bean rather than an animal with feelings just like us.
And I know how you feel, when I first watched it I cried too.
Try rice milk as well. Soy is having some problems amongst researchers.
Yeah, the Meet Your Meat video is brutal... it's what first motivated me to become vegetarian.
Soymilk is a good substitute... some taste a lot better than others though, so make sure you try a variety of brands. My favorite one is Silk Plus Omega 3 DHA. Almond and rice milks are also good substitutes. Good luck!
Soy milk is good, but I like the flavor of (original) rice milk.
Yes, soymilk is a good substitute - but variety is the key.
You can also find oat and rice milk, as well as egg replacers. You may want to occasionally make your own nut milk (as it's expensive to buy).
Here is a sample recipe I use for almond milk - you can replace with other nuts:
1. Soak about 100g almonds overnight
2. Drain off water, put almonds in a blender and blend up with about 1 litre of water
3. Line the inside of a wide container with a cloth (eg. a teatowel)
4. Pour the contents of the blender inside
5. Hold the edges of the cloth together, and gradually lift, squeezing the liquid out thoroughly until no more will come.
You now have creamy almond milk that can be stored in the fridge for about 3-4 days.
The meal left inside the cloth can be stored and used in cooking, or on cereal.
Good luck, and congrats on becoming a vegetarian!
