Why are there all of these questions about nutritional supplements?!

Question: It's astounding to me. If you are a true vegan, knowledgeable about your body and nutritional needs, why would you need supplements. I've NEVER taken supplements.

I've said, if you need supplements that means you need more knowledge and aren't tuned in to true vegan ways.

What do you say? And IF you take supplements, why do you feel the need to do so? What don't you understand about being vegan?

for the first time ever I think I agree with you

you do not need to take supplements on a vegetarian diet at all.

and on a Vegan diet if you eat enough of the right thing you shouldn't need VB12 supplements- although as he said you do need the knowledge

Theres no need to act holier-than-thou.

Whats wrong with supplements anyways?

Because on a pure vegan diet, it can be difficult to get all the B12 you need; and if your vegetables are grown in a low-iodine environment like the British Isles, you may need iodine supplements as well.

I'm happy that you are a "true vegan." But as a vegan, you may want to give that high horse a rest.

Some people - not I, since I'm not a vegan, and hate the taste of supplements - just like making certain they get all their vitamins. Eating certain combinations of food, or eating a lot of insoluble fibre, can prevent your body from absorbing all the vitamins and minerals from food, so I can see why someone might pop a pill. It's like insurance - just to make sure.

Why does it concern you?

You take a supplement just to be sure. Not everyone who is vegan can eat perfectly healthy every meal. Some people's jobs won't allow it. Sometimes travel doesn't allow for it. Taking a multi-vitamin is something that you can always do.

If it's such an affront to your pride, don't take one. What don't you understand about covering all the bases?

BTW Mr. True Vegan---do you use organic produce or ride in or on vehicles? Then you aren't a true vegan either so you should ease up on your fellows.

I asked a question about supplements because I'm a curious person, and I wanted to know.

Not all of us are as wise or as committed (speaking of being committed...) as you so obviously are. So not only do you dislike vegetarians, you also dislike vegans who may not be eating perfectly or those who choose to take a multi-vitamin? Where do you find the time for all of this vegan love?

What I don't understand about being vegan is how you can claim to be one yet be so hateful to the only people who are actually trying to take a step in the right direction. :)

I am a flexitarian vegetarian so I take no nutritional supplements. However, I maintain that knoweldge, as you point out, of one's chosen lifestyle is important to live that lifestyle faithfully. I know both vegans and vegetarians who take no supplements because they have mastered the knowledge necessary to live supplement free.

If you have to take supplements it's because you are lazy in learning what you need to know.
