A serious question for vegetarians...?!
I've been a vegetarian for 2 years now, and I am starting to think eating fish (but still no red meat, poultry, etc.). I think that eating shrimp and fish would be better for my health than not eating it. What are your opinions on this? What are the pro's and cons of eatting fish again? Moral thoughts? Health thoughts?
Answers: This is a serious question - so please no stupid answers.

Well your decision is entirely down to your own personal choice.
But in answer to your question, provided that you have a full, balanced diet and get your essential fatty acids from elsewhere, then there is no actual need to eat fish.
I've been veggie for 16 years and I actually REALLY miss fish, though I don't miss meat. But I read a quote by Linda McCartney ".. Fish have feelings too, and anyone who has seen a fish hooked out of the water, jerking and gasping for breath, should realise that.." that quote always pops in to my mind when I crave fish, in a way a fish's death is more drawn out than most animals that are killed for meat, as they are netted or hooked, then slowly suffocate.
But as I say at the top of this post, this is all sown to individual choice, make an informed decision and go with your feelings on the matter.
fish is nasty dont eat it
I eat Vegetarian & Seafood thats all
eat whatever u want, no one should judge u.
eat the seafood god made fish for people to eat they are full of omega 3 and that is the best thing fo your body
I've been a vegetarian for almost 17 years now and i haven't had any side effects or anything like that. It's up to you if you like fish and want to eat it. Don't feel guilty or anything about that. I get all i need from fruit and veg. It's up to you though. Good luck.
It would not be healthier, especially with all of the pollution. And humans are not designed to eat/digest meat. Supplement your diet with flax oil if you really think you need it. Let the fishies swim free!!
I dont eat any meat
you can if you want tho :]
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I'm vegetarian, and i've been for about 15 years..and i eat fish. I know most people will say...its a life, but Fish has scales and its from the Sea..and also i would NEVER kill an Animal, so therefore i wont eat it either...
I was a vegetarian for one whole year and in that year I did eat fish because it was better for my health. I just refrained from meat and chicken.
I guess...but don't eat sushi...becuz lots of fish are on the cusp of endangerment.
eat omega 3 fatty fishes...like tuna or cod.
salmon is ok.
u can have fish...just not everyday.
Yeah, I used to be a piscetarian (eats fish but no other meat) and then I read a book called "The End of The Line" about overfishing and how we won't have most species of fish by 2010 if we keep eating fish like we do today...stay a vegetarian, fish feel too and are mistreated.
I suggest that everybody watch this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...
it is very insightful and includes a section on the mistreatment of marine life. Good Luck.
Whatever you decide. I am a vegetarian, and personally I actually think humans were meant to eat fish and poultry and what you could hunt for yourself - but not pigs and cows and whatever else. However, if you do decide to eat fish, you will not be a vegetarian anymore (i know to some that is obvious, but many people do so and continue to call themselves a vegetarian).
I say stay a vegetarian
thats what Jesus would do
Well I think if your going to be a vegitarian you shouldn't want to eat meat so I think you should not.
there is nothing wrong on eating fish, but i dont think shrip might help you that much in your health, i think fish is healtier because, did u know that the people who live the longest are the japanese? well thats because they are always (believe me) ALWAYS eating fish, fish makes your life longer (well depend on what kind of fish like if u eat tuna or white fish thats actually bad because they mercury) but other fishes like salmon, or mero, those are very healthy.
it's your own opinion on which diet you choose to suite your own lifestyle, but fish are quite healthy if you cook it the right way, one tip for you is to stay away from fish and ohter animals in the water that do not have scales such as catfish and shrimp, beacuse having no scales they absorb the impurites in the water, but i know shrinp are really good, but the bottom line is if you decide to eat fish you cant call yourself a vegetarian.
Fish will add protein and Omega-3 to your diet, which is very good. Shrimp is about 100% cholesterol, though. Morally, it's up to you. I have heard that fish do not feel pain, but then again it is the unnecessary killing of an animal.
Eating fish is an easy way to increase your protein intake. That is what I do - no meat though. I eat this way for health not for other reasons.
y r u vegtarian because u dont wanna Sh!t stink or is it hard for u to sH!t when u eat meat
i wouldn't refuse 4 u to eating fish and shrimp even though i am a vegetarian since birth. i personally dont think that your health would be better if u ate fish and shrimp because i have not eaten even eggs in my life and i am completely healthy. so this proves that u dont need meat to be healthy. i would prefer u to still be a vegetarian.
It's ultimately your decision. However, vegetarians by definition do not consume any meat (and fish counts as meat). So if you do go back to eating fish, you won't be able to say you are vegetarian anymore. I don't want to preach and post moralizing trivia about what fish go through and stuff like that, if you like you can look up information about how fish are 'harvested'. If you are vegetarian for ethical reasons, you'd have to take concern regarding fish as well. If you are a vegetarian for health reasons, as some are, fish are pretty healthy, SOME anyway. Look out for mercury content in fish, and go for the ones with healthy fats. I personally don't consume any meat, I have found vegetarian sources for the healthy fats in fish (flax seeds, acai berries) and I don't have to worry about mercury in my food :)
well with all the pollution and **** the fish might not be so healthy as it use to be. plus fish have families and lives too. its just like eating a cow or baby lamb or chickens. i've been vegan for almost a year and all you have to do is take vitamins to get the nutrients you would otherwise get from fish and other things.
if you would rather not eat it then don't there's always other ways to get the health benofits. but also its a personal choice there's no point to me pushing you to not eat it its just up to you. just think about all the oceans that are polluted by oil spills and stuff like that. i mean how healthy can that be.
hope this helps.
Animals are to sweet to eat. =]
'There is no such thing as a vegetarian that eats fish or chicken. Just because someone might call themselves a vegetarian and eat fish and/or chicken does not mean they are a vegetarian. A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fats.'
(From The Vegetarian Society Of The UK- www.vegsoc.org)
This is for all the people who call themselves a vegetarian and still eat fish. FISH IS THE SAME AS EATING MEAT - it was alive and then it was killed for someones dinner. Don't be so ignorant.
At the end of the day, you choose what you want to do, but please, don't carry on calling yourself a vegetarian.
That would depend on your reasons for being vegetarian in the first place. If you choose not to eat meat because of the cruelty and abuse animals go through during the slaughtering/ raising/catching process than fish is no different. A lot of people who are against vegetarianism think that we simply think that killing animals for food is wrong when it actually goes deeper than that issue. It's not just the kill, it's the abuse they go through prior to it. People are very very ignorant to that. Everyone should be properly educated on this. Why don't you check out this website http://www.peta.org/ It might help shed some light for you. It contains everything you need to know about animal rights and abuse and the benefits of being vegetarian and vegan. It even specifically tells you what fish go through and how intelligent they really are. I understand missing some foods, society makes us believe that we're doing something wrong by not eating meat. Make your own decisions, but do research before you do. I hope this helps. :)
It depends on why your a vegetarian..meat just doesnt taste good or you cant stand eating anything with a face! But fish is good...
I am a long-standing vegetarian (22 years) with veggie children and a veggie partner, and most people i know are also veggie, but i'm also a medical herbalist and i have that perspective on it too.
The health advantage of eating fish is basically the fatty acids. You can also get these from other sources, including evening primrose oil, flax seed oil and sesame seeds. The last one is your best bet, and i get it by spreading tahini or hoummos, preferably the former, on bread instead of margarine. If you get them from sea fish, the problem (leaving out any moral questions) is that of heavy metal pollution accumulating in an animal product because it's higher in the food chain than plants are. Shellfish are quite allergenic, decompose quickly and can be polluted. However, there are ecological reasons for eating seafood, because phosphates are constantly lost to the land through sewage and this needs to be reversed. I think the solution to this is to eat seaweed, which is very good nutritionally, from local waters. Sea fish are basically mined unsustainably from the ocean.
Morally, the individual fish are at least not factory farmed, so their suffering is confined to the last few minutes of their lives. The best option ecologically and morally would be to go for locally caught freshwater fish a long way upstream.
The best solution morally, if you really want to eat meat, which is unlikely to be necessary for almost everyone although it is natural, would be to eat roadkill.
You cannot be a vegeterian and eat fish.
Fish are annimals.
I think it would make you a hypocrite.
If it's because of your health, take a potassium vitamin. Take freaking vitamins.
Some fish are even bad for you. The fish we eat are dying out because everyone is eating them.
I don't know why you became a vegeterian, but I did because I think it's immoral the way the treat animals.
That means ALL animals. reguardless if they swim or walk. Even shrimp.
Plus if you haven't eaten fish or shrimp in two years, your body isn't going to accept it at first. You will most likely have upset stomachs and get some unpleasant bowel movements. You'll feel sick too. Obviously, your body will eventually get used to it.
Morally, it's wrong. You just can't say "They way the treat animals are bad which is why I don't eat meant", while eating fish that has been caught by a hook, left on the boat to suffocate, then sliced open.
If you considered eating it for health reasons, go to GNC or some other health vitamin store and tell them youre vegeterian and want something simply that contains the vitamins for fish.
Besides, you can't get the SAME vitamins that you would get from fish from other foods: Olives, sun-dried tomatos, risotto cakes, sea vegetables, sushi nori rolls, etc etc.
Fish are animals. You are eating an animal. Shrimp is an animal. You are eating an animal.
The oceans ecosystem is suffering because of humans. Species are dying out. INCLUDING FISH. Do you want to take part in that?
fish isn't a meat and prawns are a seafood
so eat them all you want
I would suggest fish for sure...fish do not blink so they feel no pain so it's okay to catch and eat them....lol...seriously the good lord put them on this earth to be eaten by us...
You miss a lot by being a vegetarian. Fish is a vital for protein which helps you grow. Just eat tuna or something. It was all intended for people to eat animals , so I would. But don't just go with what I say. Make your own mind up.
