I've never seen a grocery store that didn't sell tofu. I don't know where you live, but here, even my local convenience store sells aseptic boxes of tofu, the kind that don't need refrigerated.
Buy a pound of extra-firm tofu (not silken!), and puree one half of it in the blender. Add one cup of ricotta cheese and a half-cup of grated parmesan. Stuff the mixture into cannelloni noodles or layer between lasagne sheets.
Another easy way to use extra-firm tofu is to cut it into fingers, then dredge it in milk, broth, juice or eggs. Bread it using Shake and Bake, and then bake in the oven until crisp. Dunk them in BBQ sauce like chicken nuggets.
You can always just cube firm tofu up and marinate in teriyaki or other stir-fry sauce and then saute it in a wok with veggies. It's also tasty cubed into a curry.
Usually it tastes best if you let it sit for a bit in whatever sauce you're using so it soaks up all that flavour.
Go to your local library and get some books on vegetarian cooking. Find out first if you can do it. Don't jeapordize your health on a whim!
To start being vegetarian, you can't just wake up one day and not eat meat. You need to ease your body into not eating meat, as it can be a shock to not eat meat after eating meat all you life. So, basically, you need to start eating less meat each day.
I'm guessing that you want tofu for protein. There are many different substitutes for tofu, like beans( very good for you) and peanut butter ( good for you if you don't eat more than 2 tablespoons.) Tofu is good eaten in recipes as a replacement for meat, as it is a good meat substitute. You also need to take a daily multivimin and a vitemin D pill every day. You'll just need to go to Wal-mart or where ever and stock up on tofu and beans.
I hope this awnsered your question.
A streamlined answer for you.
Vegetarians do NOT eat animals. That includes beef, poultry, FISH and pork.
If you intend on being a vegetarian, keep that in mind. Also, there are four types of vegetarians. Lacto-ovo vegetarians don't eat beef, poultry, fish and pork but eat dairy and eggs. Ovo-vegetarians don't eat beef, poultry, fish, pork and dairy, but eat eggs. Lacto-vegetarians don't eat beef, poultry, fish, pork and eggs, but eat dairy. Vegans are a branch of vegetarians that eat NO animal products. They don't eat beef, pork, fish, poultry, dairy or eggs. They also don't use or wear products that come from animals either.
Another thing you should avoid as a vegetarian is gelatin.
What you eat depends on what type of vegetarian you are. You can pretty much eat anything you ate as a omnivore, just in a different way. You can eat meat replacements such as veggie "sausage", veggie burgers, and pizzas, tofu, veggies, fruit, grains, etc. You can buy pretty much everything you need at your local grocery store. (Walmart or Supertarget if you shop at either of those too) If you want something they don't carry, ask them to order it for you. Just jazz it up so you won't get bored. Try www.vegweb.com for recipes. Good Luck!
The easiest way that I know for you to get it if you live that far out in the country - is to have it shipped to you from some place like Amazon.com .
I have ordered food from them myself for things that I can't get out here in the area that I live in. They have a wide variety of things for you to make choice of that will be a real help to you - everything from food products to cookbooks (the one cookbook that I bought for someone that they always love to quote from is a book I got for them from that very place).
There are other sites on the internet as well I am sure - just that is the first one that came to mind as I also order my books and other things from there as well - and it was the first to pop in my head.
If you need - I am sure that I can find other sites for you if you need - simple search engine is a friend to me that I have used many times and have found much information from - that I suggest to others to also use.
That is how I found out about the vegan cheeses that I buy (no milk products as I have a grandbaby that is allergic to milk) - soy ice cream (that I found to really taste as good as 'regular ice cream' for the same reason - just a host of things.
Hope that helps.
First and foremost you can in fact go vegetarian or vegan overnight, it's what I did and there was no negative results from it.
On the topic of recipes though I suggest you try this website

I'm not really sure what to tell you about how to get tofu besides that you might just have to travel a bit to get it =/ you might be able to have it shipped to your house from a website, but I really don't know about that. There are however many great vegetarian recipes that don't call for tofu if it is really that hard to acquire.
