A cup of cooked quinoa has as much calcium as a quart of milk, and is also a good source of protein and iron. It's tasty and is as versatile as rice.

You can also try fortified orange juice and fortified soy milk. Dark green veggies are a good source of calcium as well. Calcium-set tofu is a great option as well.

I would add that, seeing as how you have a condition that requires special consideration, you should see a registered dietician for help planning a diet that meets your medical needs. Also know that consuming animal protein causes calcium to be leached from your bones to neutralize the acid environment that animal protein promotes. So... dairy products are not the end all be all of calcium sources because they come packaged with proteins that will cost you calcium.

Yes, you can. There are a few different "happy cow" brands of milk. They vary by region.

If you live near a Whole Foods, check out their dairy section and read the labels. See what's available in your area of the country.

Check dairy products for a "Certified Humane" label. More info: http://www.hsus.org/farm/resources/pubs/...

There are non-animal sources of calcium, but calcium absorption is tricky. Some calcium is not as available as others and it matters what other nutrients are consumed at the same time. With your condition, you should work closely with a specialized nutritionist before giving up dairy.

Actually Milk and dairy products are very hazerdous to your health. But about the calcium, there is asolutly NO calcium in Milk or any dairy (except a tiny bit in eggs). When Milk is pasteurized, all the vitamins and calcium are taken out. Also, Dairy has a protein (a bad protein) called Casein, it's a glue. So if any of the vitamins or calcium is still in the milk after they pasteurize it-will stick to this Casein. The best way to get calcium is to avoid dairy products. Get some soy, or rice milk. Rice milk is tasty too! Also take in alot of nuts and seeds. www.notmilk.com on more about the dangers of dairy.

Hello! I just answered a question about "free range explotation" and i′m going to copy and paste it for you. I really hope you can take this in consideration.
I will give you some links about the nutrition facts in a vegan diet also, including "milk & calcium" relationship. There are lots of vegan food that contains great(er) amount of calcium.

- No cruelty being somebody′s property? SOMEONE being treated as a SOMETHING? with someone else deciding WHERE you′re going to live, WHERE you′re going to go, WHEN you′re going to get pregnant and WHEN you′re going to be killed?

There′s no way i could be a "happy healthy human" living under those terms, and there′s no reason to believe that a cow, a pig, a duck or any other animal would.

There′s no way to exploit and enslave a sentient being with "NO CRUELTY".

There might be "more" or "less" suffering, of course, as it would be "less" suffering if a rapist didn′t hit it′s victim too. But, does it make "raping without hitting" something good, respectable or not cruel?
I do not think so. I think raping it′s wrong because it hurts someone who doesn′t want to get hurt, raped or mistreated. The victimary doesn′t think about his victim′s interests. The victimary it′s ALWAYS thinking about his own interests alone.

Same here.

I think, we′re missing the point that every sentient being has interests. We all have desires, wants and needs. We all WANT to have a continuous life, and we all WANT to live it as it is "natural" for us, that is, being free. But really free (not just living in a larger cage or with a LONG LONG LONG rope tied up at our necks).

There is NO "happy cow" being exploited. There is NO "happy meat", "happy milk" or "happy eggs". There′s always sadness, pain and suffering involved. No matter what "welfarists" or "conscious meat-dairy-egg-eaters" might say.

With all due respect...

Calcium fortified soy milk and orange juice (make sure the label says they are fortified).

Other good sources of calcium are tofu, sesame seeds, almonds, other seeds and legumes, okra and broccoli.
