Milk is murder - a question for vegitarians?!

Question: How many veggies (not vegans) out there believe that meat equals murder and cruelty? How many of you partake of dairy products?

Are you aware that in order for a mammal to produce milk it must give birth , dairy cattle give birth to a calf once a year to ensure continued milk production. These calfs either - become veal calfs - cramped in boxes and force fed milk powder - or killed within hours of their birth and made in to either dog meat or fertilizer ?

I post this question to make people think about what food they eat and where it comes from, not to poke fun or critise any lifestyle choices you choose to follow.

This is based on the premise that animals are not food products, or slaves to produce food products. It will be a hard sell, not to a vegan like myself, but to the whole mass of society. All of this is done behind closed doors, and all people see is the nice yummy creamy milk and cheese products at the store in nice plastic wrappers with brightly colored labels on the front. Now supposedly, growers that have the organic label on their dairy products have cows that are well tended too. That they are given outdoor grazing, birthing rights, and no harming of calves. Well, that was suppose to be the case, but now all they have to do is feed them organic feed to be organic, and of course no antibiotics or hormones used. Now you have to look for the Humane label on the dairy product for all the above stuff mentioned to be guaranteed. Sheesh! Dairy farmers have quite the lobby in Congress! They try to get around as much as they can, but a few dedicated individual consumer groups are on to them, but it takes a while for the news to reach out to people.
Good luck on getting people thinking about what food they eat and where it comes from. Food awareness for the masses will probably not happen until it is too late (disease, famine, etc.).

veal....yum.

surly then milk is life

As a vegetarian I don't understand what the hell you're rambling on about. Either you're a meat eater, who thinks being a vegetarian is hypocritical, or you're a hardcore vegan, who enjoys shoving you're own narrow-minded opinions down everyone elses throats.

I know exactly where my food comes from, that's why I'm a vegetarian.

You aren't really interested in if I believe meat=cruelty, nor are you specifically concerned with who here partakes of dairy products.
You post this 'question' as you believe you have made bigger, better choices than those who chose a different path from yourself, and wish to use this board as a self praising forum.
Quite right too, as you are obviously proud of your morals. As am I - but I don't feel the need to advertise mine here.

do you wear leather shoes ?

"not to poke fun or critise any lifestyle choices you choose to follow"........do you not see that right here you are poking at people?......yes most people know that animals used to produce food is cruel. with all the peta people at large concert venues, street corners , prime time adverts, etc it would be hard not to. but thats an awfully nice soapbox ya got there! oh its also been in the NEWS how much healthier a diet is without dairy. anything else?

everyone else seems to have taken offense, but (i think) i understand what you're saying. i try to eat as few animal products as possible, but i still eat fish and cheese. (i don't eat red meat, poultry, eggs, or milk.) i may not be doing as good as some people out there, but at least i'm doing something, which is more than many people can say. anyhow, i think you are right, people should be aware of what they are eating, and constantly reminded about it. the meat industry (and dairy, etc...) is thriving because people have blinders on. i don't think there is anything wrong with your question, and i'm glad you asked it. however, make sure that you appreciate vegetarians who are doing their part. if everyone would just do a little, then we could accomplish A LOT!

Never mind your grammar. At least you read the rantings in the popular press.
Just because meat is eaten is not the issue. It is the way the animals are kept before slaughter that is wrong.

Did you know that barn kept hens have less space per bird than cage kept hens?

i am a vegitarian ..... i do not eat meat and i drink soya milk .

since stopped eating meat and drinking milk my weight has gone down alot and i feel so much better. i do not agree with animal cruelty but i do not push my views onto anyone else. it is all about freedom of choice.

i am who i am and i am happy for everyone else to be who they want to be.

simple as that really

annalou

i am a vegitarien, but its not because i dont want to kill animals because i mean thats never going to happen, but i think that i just dont want to be the one who eats meat. i dont eat it but i love love milk, i honestly couldnt live without it. and i think that they dont kill all calves because then they wouldnt have anymore cows so. plus plus its not like i am going to ever eat that dead cow if they kill the baby.

yes i am aware of how milk is produced. i know how the calves are treated and i know that cows suffer.i dont drink milk but i do eat cheese. i only use organic cheese . my husband eats meat but i refuse to buy any meat that isnt organic. he has to have the best that i can get. and the same applies to dairy products. i can only do my best. i know its not good enough. i know that somewhere in the production of my glass of wine, an animal has suffered. i always think about where food comes from and i always try to avoid causing suffering to an animal. i try, i wish food producers did the same.

If you are not a vegetarian, why do you care?

Do you really think you're informing us of things we don't know? Do you really think we haven't researched and learned all about animal cruelty, factory farming and dairy and egg production?

What exactly is the point of your non-question?

I completely agree, i am a vegan because i don't understand how milk isn't murder?
plus, milk isn't for humans to drink.
Only baby cows.
Breast-feeding is for baby-humans.
would you give human milk to a cow?
so yes I agree.
plu calcium isn't even in milk.
they pasterise it and to all these processes that take the nutrients out.

Well I eat meat, but don't make too much of a big deal of it.

I think people should just choose what they want to eat themselves, like I eat both which is normal.

I say that this is normal to eat other animals as that is the food chain as we eat other animals and use them for food.
It's completely normal. However, I'm not criticizing other's lifestyles as everything is up to you if you eat meat or not.

Yes, meat is murder to the highest extent.
I don't drink milk, I do soymilk (not real milk).

I don't eat eggs.

REAL vegetarians don't eat these things. The people you know of that are doing that are just telling you they are vegetarians.

Question. How do you think it is that you became Big John? It was not by drinking water.

who cares? it's farming. it's the way it goes. Hippie.
