Rendering of ethanized dog/cat carcasses for animal food use?!
http://www.organicconsumers.org/madcow/u... that claims that pets euthanized in animal shelters are used for meat in petfood and as livestock feed. That totally can't be true in this day and age, can it?
Answers: Yes, this is a really gross question, but I found this article:

Disgusting and true. If you have to have a pet euthanized at some point, check with your vet to find out where your pets' remains will be disposed of.
It's also important to look for pet food that has a high quality protein source.
The things happening in this day and age would blow the minds of people who lived 100 years ago. We've become so "advanced", haven't we?
I have a friend who lived across from a rendering plant, and she said the smell was the most unbearable thing you could imagine. It was eventually shut down- probably due to the complaints of dead animals falling off the packed truck on its way to the plant.
"The rendering plant floor is piled high with ’raw product’: thousands of dead dogs and cats; heads and hooves from cattle, sheep, pigs and horses; whole skunks; rats and raccoons --all waiting to be processed. In the 90-degree heat, the piles of dead animals seem to have a life of their own as millions of maggots swarm over the carcasses...
As the American Journal of Veterinary Research explains, this recycled meat and bone meal is used as ‘a source of protein and other nutrients in the diets of poultry and swine and in pet foods, with lesser amounts used in the feed of cattle and sheep. Animal fat is also used in animal feeds as an energy source.’ Every day, hundreds of rendering plants across the United States truck millions of tons of this ‘food enhancer’ to poultry ranches, cattle feed-lots, dairy and hog farms, fish-feed plants and pet-food manufacturers where it is mixed with other ingredients to feed the billions of animals that meat-eating humans, in turn, will eat."
I don't think so. I think there would be a serious backlash if this was going on. However, given this day and age, it wouldn't surprise me. We need to stay on top of it and take nothing for granted. Management executives have proven time and again that they are not worthy of trust. They are greedy liars.
Anything is possible. Most of the time they just get tossed with the trash though.
Shouldn't this be under pets?
Yes, it is gross.
Always consider the source of anything on the internet. Do more research is you're worried--try the FDA and whatever other agencies are involved, And for Pete's sake, don't research it in Wiki--that thing is written by anybody.
using that stuff does not keep food prices down , it maximizes profit. they're greed makes me sick. no more gummie bears in my house
Yes this is true.
However I ask you this - what difference does it make whether it's a dog or a cow? It's all the same. Unless you're a vegetarian, it would be hypocritical to be grossed out.
Yes, it's true and the latest theory about why so many cats are suffering from kidney failure younger and younger is that they are ingesting the drugs used to euthanize dogs and cats in their food.
If we were grinding up cows and feeding them to cows (which is well documented and the cause for the spread of BSE) then why would you presume that we're doing anything more "on the level" when it comes to feeding dogs and cats? You can find commercial pet food preparations that are made without rendered animals. "Pet Promise" is one.
Well, in this "day and age" people buy clothes for their fluffy puppies and kitties and then sit dow to eat a dead ground-up animal every night.
I've seen this in several places over several years (including on TV) & yes it's unbelievably horrific but it's apparently true. Some shelters have been criticized for selling euthanized animals to rendering plants, also.
If a product's ingredient list contains words like "animal protein" "animal fat" etc. this could refer to *any* animal, not necessarily one that is regarded as a "food" animal.
