What do I serve with it, or is it enough?!
Is that enough? Coz my carnivore friends have big old huge chunks of beef in theirs, but I don't want the veggies going hungry!!!!
Answers: I've made for my veggie friends a winter vegetable casserole, (potatoes, onions, carrots, swede, baby turnips, parsnips, it's all rich and thick, made tasty with veg stock, wine, fresh herbs and garlic, and I've made (with vegetable suet) some lovely light and fluffy spring onion and parsley dumplings.

Sounds good enough to me as it is. I was going to suggest adding cannellini, butter or haricot beans or similar but I see you already have split peas, lentils and barley, that should be fine.
You could offer (separately) some tofu chunks fried with onion.
I think that should be enough. Get a load of chocolate bars incase they are hungry afterwards. :)
Ellie.
I'd like a chunk of French-bread with mine,please.
That sounds great! You could serve up some chunks of crusty bread with it to mop up all that delicious sauce.
Sounds plenty to me, but I agree with the loaf of bread on the table, mops up the gravy and fills any little gaps. Maybe offer some cheese afterwards ?
Sounds yummy! You mentioned beef (a protein source) for your carnivore friends, perhaps you may want to add a protein source for your veggie friends - perhaps some veggie burger patties may be a nice addition.
the amount of dumplings and a thick stew will have enough calorific content to keep you satisfied, it just is the meat there is a lack of but meat is very filling, not as much as starch in dumplings
How about a salad of field greens or spinach, a little red onion or scallion, dried cranberries and toasted slivered almonds or pecans, with a viniagrette? Add a little protein to the meal, and is refreshing. If they eat cheese, some cheese and apples/grapes for afters. Or just fruit if they don't. Sounds wonderful!
Brown lentils would be the best addition for this dish. It would have been the ingredient of choice in the days before beef became widely available.
Soak the lentils in boiling water for 4 hours and then boil until soft and mushy (this can vary quite a bit with different lentils, a pressure cooker helps speed things up). Actually it's quite a good addition to a beef casserole too, in a small quantity.
i would serve it with crunchy french bread
Sounds like you are a friend and a half. How lovely of you. The food sound delicious.
Although how about a great big dish of crispy fluffy roastiz...???
Or chunks of warm crusty bread with real butter to run down your chin...???
Or maybe a bowl of plain white rice...??? .....Enjoy anyway...xxx
That sounds absolutely wonderful. I would just make sure you have enough fat content in the stew to make sure it is rich, and that will be filling enough and lovely texture on the palate.
And an apple pie with ice cream is lovely too, in which they can fill up on that. I think you are all set!
As a cook, I would have added something red to the stew: red bell peppers, or diced tomatoes perhaps (although that is overpowering).
As said bread, it's a must. I eat meat, but often eat vegan food with vegan friends, and there is nothing lacking. Also I quite often have meatless meals, so I don't really understand your concern.
Sounds lovely. Sounds like a very filling 'stodgy' meal as it is (that's a GOOD thing! lol). As I started reading, my thoughts were 'dumplings'....but you've covered that! lol So, no, sounds perfect. As your meals usually do! I would really like some of your recipes, if you wouldn't mind sharing, as you always make my (all our!) mouth water when you tell us about your entertaining. Usually when I get together with Friends, liquid sustenance is all that's on our minds! I think you have a great bunch of freinds, and Ihope they know how lucky they are to have YOU cater for them!
Great afford
