The more people know the better they understand. People are happy to live a blinkered life though.
I EAT MEAT AND HAVE DONE SO ALL MY LIFE.. BUT YES YOU ARE RIGHT WE ALL SHOULD TAKE MORE NOTICE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING..
WELL DONE TO YOU..
People who eat meat have a good idea what goes on before the meat goes on their dinner table but we just can't bear thinking about it. Whilst people kill animals for meat and we don't see it that's fine with everybody. Okay maybe you think this is wrong, but how would vegetarians like it if they had to go everyday to the fields to pick their own carrots, cabbage, potatoes, peas, runner beans, parsnips etc. they would all complain so it's no different for veggies as it is for meat eaters.
No one wants to be lectured on what they eat, I'm a vegetarian and I hate it when people have a go at me for not eating meat so don't have a go at people if they decide to eat it, its they're choice.
I am a vege and my dad is always on my case. I tell them
1. I feel better not eating meat
2. I dont want mad cow disease
3. Veggies are more refreshing
My daughter shares the same views, but in my opinion you cant beat a tender piece of fillet steak. We are carnivores after all, so it makes sense that the majority eat meat.
I do respect other peoples opinions, but it gets me mad when they try to force them upon others.
Be careful not to become one of those types.
i have for many years raised and slaughtered my own meat, chickens turkeys rabbits goats and sheep. will you try and take the skining knife from me and release my livestock to the "wild"? any 14 year old newly minted vegitarian who goes about preaching on the evils of other peoples diets deserves whatever abuse he or she receives.
Not all animals are treated like that. Just make sure your mom or dad buy cruelty free animal products...don't give up meat!
I think it's guilt. Some people listen and others laugh it off or insist it's not that bad. I think they're just responding out of guilt.
Try going to Peta or Vegan Outreachs website and forward them some emails and newsletters and some videos documenting cruelty and stuff. You will never change people instantaneously, and you can't be defensive about it. If you are then other people get defensive too, the best thing you can do is quietly keep on at it, never give up your beliefs! You won't change most people, but even if you just plant the seed of suspicion that something isn't right then it may grow and change them a few years down the line.
Becoming vegetarian or vegan is such a huge thing to do, and people would rather turn their backs because it is easier. You won't be able to change the world on your own, neither will I, but if each vegetarian could influence just like 5 people in our entire lives, and each people we influenced could change 5 people, it wouldn't be an instant thing but eventually it WOULD happen.
People laughed and ignored rights for women and black people at first but look how that's turned out now! Just keep persevering hun!
Do not tell people what to eat. My grandpa keeps telling me im gunna die sooner if I don't eat meat and it's not true and I hate it when people tell be to eat meat all the time.
I respect your views i have a few veggi friends who try to make me one of them they say its cruel etc and that we should leave the cows-pigs-sheep etc to live a normal life but if we didn't eat them we wouldn't have any left they are bred for food they are not pets who wants to pay to feed a cow and get nothing back if we were all veggies we would no cows sheep pigs chickens etc so our grandchildren will only see pictures of them not the real thing We know what goes on but just ignore it Good luck in what you believe in
I do leafleting in the park here down town and many people don't want to hear it.
One time I asked a lady, "Would you like a leaflet on veganism?" And she said, "Why would I want to be vegan?" I told her that she'd be saving animals, and then she was all interested.
It's funny because I don't think a lot of people really think about what they're eating. They're not really thinking "oh wow, this used to be a living creature". They're just like, "Hamburgers taste good." Which is pretty idiotic in all honestly. But in their defense, not many people question their norms.
Good luck and keep it up (knowledge is power).
Because people want to eat there meat and they don't want to know sow the animals are killed because they want to eat there meat but i agree totally with you if people are going to eat meat they should know where it comes from and what all goes into it! and how all the animals are treated so they need to know but no one wants to know because they want to eat there meat guilt free!
People turn their backs because they really don't want to know. The more they know, the more they have to think about what they put in their mouths. It's just easier for a lot of people to pretend they don't know so they can enjoy their cheeseburger. This is not uncommon and it applies to a lot of things people don't want to have to deal with.
People might not be accepting your message because of the way it's delivered. How are you telling them about animal cruelty? Are you showing them graphic pictures or questioning them while they are eating? If so, you might want to consider that you can win people over to your side better if you practice a little diplomacy. Start by being a good example of a healthy, happy vegetarian. Don't criticize or judge people, but be prepared to answer their questions if they seem interested. If someone isn't interested in what you have to say now, you might have to let it go. You've planted a seed and it might grow into something in the future even if they aren't open to it now.
because you can't spell
Animals eat animals and life isn't a Disney/Pixar movie.
At 14 you must really feel that you are on to something... wouldn't it be easier for you if you would just go play baseball or read real books like other teenage boys? Reading and believing every word that is on the PETA websites is wrong as much of the info is misleading or untrue. They make this propaganda emotionally misleading to sucker young people into their organization. I wish people like you would really just go to a real farm and see what really goes on. It is not as bad as you are led to believe. Animals are cared for very well, fed very nutritious diets (better than most people in third world countries), vaccinated and in general lead a good life. At maturity they are taken to a processing plant and killed instantly without any lingering pain. Animals are a major part of our economy, you may claim to be meat free, yet I bet there are any number of animal byproducts that you still use and dont even realize it. You are too young to understand the full economic benefit that animals provide for us. You are young and impressionable, be careful that you understand the difference between the truth and emotional bias's that distort the truth.
It's probably the way you go about it - no offense to you, I'm sure you mean well, but people get defensive when they feel they're being attacked.
I won't eat factory farmed meat (I won't eat meat except certain kinds of seafood - but that is a discussion for another day). I won't buy my pets the 'tinned food' made with euthanized or roadkill animals. Do I tell these horrors my friends as they're sitting down to a steak, or cracking open a can of Whiskas for little Fluffems?
No, you can approach it more subtly. Drop facts into conversations - wait until it's obviously not an attack. People tend to turn their backs a lot less.
If you are going to be vegetarian, you need to stop talking about it unless there is someone that asks you about it.
If someone doesn't want to hear it, keep your mouth shut or learn to talk about other things.
Every time that you try to share your reasons for being veg when no one wants to hear it, you just make people less likely to think about it in a positive light in the future. You also help perpetuate the stereotype that veg people are preachy and never shut up about it. This doesn't help the animals in any way. It actually makes things worse for them.
Even if people know about it doesn't always mean they will become vegetarian & really most omnivores don't want to know the truth.
it's not that they are turning their backs on what you are saying. it's probably because they find it quite annoying for a 14 year is so full of herself as to assume that they are ignorant about life. Plus remember that you are basically intruding into other peoples business or choices. Would you like it somebody bothered you about your being a vegetarian? You re 14 and one thing you should learn is to allow people to make their own decisions. and not because you've read about it somewhere, it doesn't mean it's totally true. You have a lot to learn and it helps to keep an open mind about everything.
They are tuning you out because they most likely are tired of hearing your preaching. Just being honest dear. That would be my guess. Most people... especially young persons your age are too busy living life to be bothered by all your rhetoric. I'm not saying that is "bad", I'm saying that is the way things are. They are enjoying their youth. It's how it works. I'm sure they care, but are not strident about it.
