Will becoming a vegetarian help me loose weight?!

Question: I'm not sure If I could because my mum cooks a lot of African dishes and in all of them they contain meat.

Will it be hard?

What do you think guys?

You shouldn't become something because you think it will make you skinnier, you should do it because you believe in the cause.

Actually, becoming a vegetarian can have the opposite effect because meat contains heaps of protein, which fills you up and stops you feeling hungry, so you would eat more without meat. Also, some people get in a mind set where they think that just because they've become a vegetarian, they will become skinny, so they eat all this "bad" food.

The only true way to loose weight is to eat healthily and partake regular exercises.

It really depends what you eat. As long as you exercise and eat less calories than you burn off you'll lose weight, regardless the diet. Vegetarian diets are typically high in fiber and full of good, healthy fats (not cholesterol or saturated fats). As long as you don't overindulge in nuts and cheese (both are calorie whammies), you will probably lose weight.

I would suggest eating lots of fruits and steamed or fresh vegetables - and go for a whole variety of fruits and veggies. Avoid frying; try to steam, bake, or sautée with just a little bit of oil. Get lots of whole grains, avoid white rice and white pastas. Try bean sprouts, they are low in calorie and can fill up a wrap or sandwich fast. Avoid processed (Boca, Morningstar) foods and don't add a lot of salt to your home-cooked food either.

It might be hard, but any time you try to change a habit or change your lifestyle, it's difficult at first. I think the best reinforcement and motivation is to see positive results.

Also, no matter what, drink a lot of water. You should lose weight at a healthy pace then.

Not really !

Have you seen how big elephants are.

maybe but rememer one thing - it's not what you eat it is how much you eat.

I was vegetarian for 20 years and recently gave up - I havent put on any weight! It is easier to eat junk if you are veggie as it can be more difficult or more hassle to prepare healthy meals!

depends how much you eat of it.Have you seen the size of elephants.

well i have been vegetarian all my life and i am 2 stones overweight, so no.
I know its boring, but the only way to lose weight, is to eat everything you fancy but within reason.
And you MUST excersise, for at least 30 minutes daily!
I have been doing this and have already lost 1 stone!
just 2 more to go

It is much healthier, and if you get enough protien, good fats, good carbs, vitamins, and minerals it will help you maintain a healthy weight.

It's amazing what a vegetarian diet can do for your body and mind!

Lose. The word is lose.

I've recently become a vegetarian and my mom is such a good cook and is a meat lover. I have had to make a lot of adjustments, but it's a good thing because I now cook a lot for myself! I have lost weight since becoming meatless, but it has taken time. I don't think you will lose weight right away, as it will take time. Try going vegetarian maybe a couple days a week and see how that goes. There are so many vegetarian "meats" and meal options. Check out vegcooking.com or read Vegetarian times for info!

Depends on what you eat.

I'm haven't lost too much weight maybe two or three pounds. But i do feel healthier, and can run longer without sleeping.

No, you won't lose weight.

It is not hard. (if so sneak the odd bacon buttie as YOUR treat).

I'm sure your mum's cooking is really good - ask if she would mind leaving the meat from your plate because, you would like to go in the direction of a Veggie - but you don't wan't to miss out on mum's cooking.

1 x drawback - until your body is used to pulses etc; only - - -
you will f@rt like a good 'n......Have fun...xxx

it will make you more healthy and less strokes and heart attacks and build up on cholesterol
