Why do vegans and vegetarians not eat meat?!

Question: Is it the whole animals getting killed unhumianly thing? Because if a cow was killed in a humian way then would you eat the meat?

Have you thought about the fact that we need plants to breath? They create our oxygen. Doesn't that make you feel guilty eating plants then? I'm just seriously curious I'm not trying to piss anyone off.

People become vegetarian or vegan for as many reasons as there are vegetarians. Some, of course, are vegetarian from birth because their faith dictates it. Others don't support the way animals are treated or killed. Some are veg*n for environmental reasons. Some don't like the way it tastes. Etc...

For me, it's a combination of reasons. I don't believe that it's ethically acceptable to imprison, torture and kill animals for food when it's in no way necessary. There IS no humane way to slaughter an animal for food, though there are endless improvements that could be implemented in the raising and feeding of livestock. It's also the healthy choice for me. Vegetarians have lower instances of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, kidney disease and several kinds of cancer. We live, statistically, 6-10 years longer than meat eaters. What's good for the animals and good for me just happens to also be the more responsible choice for the environment. Intensive animal agriculture contributes every bit as much to greenhouse gas accumulation than driving does. One environmentalist likened eating factory farmed meat to driving a gas-guzzling SUV, eating a vegetarian diet to driving a mid-size sedan, and eating a vegan diet to riding a bike or walking. It's not just greenhouse gas either; animal agriculture uses enormous amounts of water and then goes on to pollute existing water sources with fecal matter. When you add it all up, I can't think of a good reason not to be veg*n.

Your plant issue doesn't really make sense. For one, crops are renewable; we are not depleting the Earth of oxygen-giving plants by eating them. In fact, eating meat IS depleting the Earth of precious oxygen-giving rainforest; the biggest reason that Central American rainforest is being lost is cattle grazing to feed the insatiable US appetite for fast food burgers. Not to mention the fact that a meat eater is actually responsible for the death of more plants; you eat them yourself, and extraordinary amounts of plant material is fed to livestock annually.

Sigh...........I'm not a veggie, but man, have you not heard of personal choice? And what do you care?
While I still eat meat, I certainly see and cannot deny the healthy benefits of a meat free diet. Rest assured many do it for the health of it.
In fact since joining YA and reading many questions and answers from and about vegetarians I have cut way back on my meat consumption, especially red meat and boy can I tell the difference!

EDIT
You asked a question, sweetie. I answered. If you get offended so easily, don't ask questions on here.

I do it because I don't like the concept of eating animals.

Also, eating meat is VERY inefficient, so for the whole plant thing, being a vegetarian is better. It takes far more resources to raise animals for human consumption than to just eat plants yourself, so it's better for the environment to be a vegetarian.

I'm not trying to preach or anything. That's just why I don't eat meat.

People become vegetarian/vegan for different reasons. Some people just don't like the taste of meat and soe do it for the health of it whereas others don't like the thought ofan animal having to die just so they can eat something that doesn't really need to be killed.

Plants don't feel pain and the food we do eat comes from crops which were grown just for that purpose, which means that we would have enough oxygen without them.

There are a lot of reasons for not eating meat. Some reasons are for religion, health, physiological, ethical, labor conditions, psychological and cultural influence.

I personally do not do it because of how the animals are raised then killed, and I just cannot stand to eat meat. I just can't bring myself to do it.

They either choose not to eat meat because they do not like the fact of eating harmless animals and another reason is that they may not like the taste or other medical reasons.

My main reason is health and ecological sustainability, although I do agree that the whole process of raising and slaughtering animals for meat is horrifically cruel as it is done in the US.

There are so many inedible plant species, and plants are so readily renewable a resource that your question about oxygen is just laughable.

This is a link to a 3 minute video called "30 Reasons to Go Vegetarian" - it will explain why being a vegetarian is more environmentally friendly an some of the reasons people choose to not eat meat.

Hello.
I am a vegetarian thinking about being vegan. I don't eat meat because:
1. how the animals are killed in factory farms and slaughterhouses
2. don't like supprting the leather, wool, and silk industry
3. don't like eating meat! it feels like it sits in my stomach for like forever! since i don't eat meat, i don't get that feeling.
4. health reasons..less risk of cancer, lower chance of obesisty, etc.
Those are MY reasons for being vegetarian. I don't know what my mom's are, but they are probably similar to mine but she probably doesn't agree with number "2" at the top.

If animals were killed humanily, and lived a good life...i think i would still be a vegetarian.

~ i hope this helps!!! =]

Some people don't eat meat because of reactions with medicine that they are on - it makes them sick.

True vegans have a reverence for ALL of life, to put it simply. Plants are not sentient beings.

Well, I think there's no humanly way to kill a person or an animal. Killing is killing... animals sense they're about to die and feel afraid just as a person would...
There are painless ways to kill, but still, they would feel afraid and threatened.

you don't piss me off ,they do, eat meat & enjoy it .A nice roast beef ,nothing better dont let these veggies piss you off We are not cows we dont s*it on the grass &eat it ..I love my meat & i eat it every day im fed up with them trying to preach to us whats right & wrong I bet they wear leather jeans- shoes -belts etc thats animal ,enjoy what you want ,eat what you want, you could be dead tomorow If we didnt eat meat there would be no cows pigs sheep chickens etc enjoy it eat enjoyit & be happy

I don't eat meat because I don't like the idea of killing animals. I don't care if someone says they "killed humanely": there's no such thing as far as I am concerned. Killing is killing.

No, I don't feel guilty eating plants. Although they are alive, it's obviously not the same as animal life, and I can't eat rocks and dirt.

I didn't have time to read everything you wrote, but I let me say that I don't care what everyone else eats. That's up to them. I would love it if more people were vegetarian, but I have to be realistic--the world wasn't made to suit my personal wishes.

I am a vegetarian because I simply do not like the taste or smell of most meat. In only special situations will I eat meat (my faimly is a majority of hardcore texans who live on bbq-- they would disown me).
Eating plants has nothign to do with it. You eat plants, too, you don't only eat meat 24/7. Besides... since we need plants so much can you ask people why they choose to slash the rainforest down to shreds for a minimum wage job with no benefits, yet they do more damage then we could ever do.

I wouldn't like to be eaten so I choose not to eat anything that may have had awareness in the past.

There is no such thing as killing an animal "humanely".

Good question. I wish more meat eaters would ask this.

I switched for totally selfish reasons because I came to realize that humans are actually herbivores, and that eating meat and dairy is actually not good for you.

I wanted to live for as long as I could, and be as healthy and look as good as I could, so what choice did I have?

Incidentally I have been veggie for 11 yrs, vegan for 9, and it's working terrifically! Especially with as many raw fruits and veggies as possible. Those are the healthiest foods humans can eat.

I recommend reading DIET FOR A NEW AMERICA by John Robbins.

After reading that, and seeing all the research he did, if you still think humans are omnivores, then I think you just don't have a brain.
