Do vegetarians need to take supplements?!

Question: If you're eating a balanced, varied vegetarian diet there is nothing that you should need to supplement. That said, I take a simple vegetarian multivitamin daily because I do not eat perfectly all the time and it seems like good insurance.

Nutrients that you need to take a little extra care to get as a vegetarian include iron, calcium, vitamin B12 (though if you eat eggs, you should be fine there,) and zinc. Since it's much better to get your nutrients from food, just look up vegetarian sources of those nutrients and make sure to get plenty.

Protein is not a concern. If you are consuming enough calories to meet your energy needs and not living on junk food, you'll easily get plenty

It's a good idea. It all depends on what you are eating. Are you getting enough protein? Ask your doctor or you can look online for suggestions on how to get all teh nutrients and vitamins you need from the foods you eat. :-)

A vegetarian can eat a high fat, low fiber, no veggies diet just as easily as an omnivore can. People who need to take supplements (barring those with medical conditions) are people who eat a crummy diet, whether it includes meat or not.
Once again, meat supplies NO nutrient that cannot be abundantly found in plant sources.

not if they are eating a balance of all foods, i was a vegetarian for 15 years and never lacked in anything. i ate a good variatry of vegetables, legumes and calcium rich foods. As long as you eat well it's all good

They don't completely neeed to, but it would be a smart choice. As a vegetarian you can miss out on a few different nutrients which are neccessary for a healthy life. Protein is one of the main ones, because its is primarily found in meat, but it is easy to eat substitutes instead of taking suppliments, for example tofu, beans and nuts all contain a pretty sufficient amount of protein, but you if you don't like that stuff then protein shakes and suppliments are still ok. Another main nutrient that you miss out on as a vegetarian is iron, which is also primarily found in meat. Again their are a few substites like spinach and beans. I myself take iron tablets and they work well :) If you don't get enough of theese nutrients you can become weak and even anemic.

hope this helps:)

Only if a baby of nursing age is raised vegan and does not breast feed. A B12 supplement of some type should be used.

Other than that, dietary supplements are not necessary for vegetarians or non-vegetarians unless a doctor has diagnosed a problem that would require a supplement for treatment.

However, it might be a good idea if the individual does not eat a wide variety of foods; but that would be the same whether the person eats meat or not.

I take no supplements at all - and I became a 'vegetarian' not by choice this time but because the meds that I take upset my stomach if I eat meat.

Doctor says that I am totally healthy.

Now - not going to suggest that such would be the fact for everyone. If someone is not eating a balanced diet - they very well will have serious problems.

My suggestion is that if you are thinking of doing such - do it under a doctor's care so that they can monitor and make sure that what you are doing is safe and the best for you.

Those that are knowledgeable and skilled in their chosen diets do not.

if you eat eggs and dairy, probably not, but if you're vegan you might need to take supplement for B12....and watch the iron and calcium levels in your blood

Some do. Some don't. It depends on if you're eating well, or eating junk.

depends on how balanced your diet is. If you're going trough a stressful period when you mostly eat grilled cheese sandwiches and pasta, then you'll need to take vitamin C, vitamin B complex, calcium and iron.
If you eat enough fresh fruit and proteins from plants/dairy, and you're not under a ridiculous amount of stress, you don't need to take any supplements.

Yes
-- if you are using milk or other dairy products you will need iron suppliments --
-- B Complex or B 12 --

No,there are millions of vegetarians who take no supplements at all.

I've been veggie for 28 years and never taken any supplements, nor am I ever ill.

Yes as does every person whether or not that person is vegetarian it is better to just take vitamins like multi-vitamins.

No. Eating a diet with high variety, and low fat is just as good. And better absorbed by your body.

Of course, always check with your doctor, but educating yourself and eating what you need is the best solution.
