I became a dietary vegan just over 3 years ago and I found it surprisingly, laughably easy (having tried 20 years ago and lasted about 24 hours then). I think what helped this time around was (a) because of the current fad for dairy-free diets for health and/or slimming reasons, there are a lot more dairy substitutes in the shops than last time I tried (b) I now work freelance, mostly from home, so I can make most meals from scratch and don't have to eat out or buy lunch from a sandwich shop. This really helped, because the hardest thing still is to find vegan food on the hoof (although it's no that hard in Central London and any sizeable town will have a kebab shop that serves falafel!).

If you're UK based, this site will help you to find out which brands of which food are vegan:

This site also has good recipes and advice for novice vegans:

There's actually a lot you can eat, though.

My typical menus:

Breakfast ideas:
Muesli with soya milk
Porridge made with water with lots of chopped fresh or dried fruit
Wholemeal toast (most bread is vegan) with dairy-free spread and marmalade

Lunch ideas:
Peanut butter sandwich
Home-made carrot and ginger soup
Hummus and salad sandwich
Falafels and salad in pitta
Lentil, olive and sundried tomato salad

Home-made cake
Shop-bought flapjack
Soya yoghurt

Dinner ideas:
Nut roast, roast potatoes, vegetables
Pasta with shop-bought tomato sauce and added black olives
Stir fried linguine with fresh ginger, chilli and vegetables
Home-made bean burgers OR shop-bought soya-sausages with chips and peas
Vegetable curry and/or lentil dahl with rice
Red kidney beans with tomato and chilli, served with millet, rice or baked potato
Rice with lemon, cinnamon, toasted cashew nuts and vegetables
Pizza without cheese

Home-made apple crumble
Home-made steamed jam pudding
Home-made chocolate fudge cake
Soya ice-cream

Snacks:
Ready salted crisps
Chocolate or carob bar (e.g. Fry's chocolate cream, Ritter Sport marzipan bar, Just So carob, Green and Blacks)
Sherbet lemons or american hard gums (no gelatine)
Dried or fresh fruit
Oat cakes

Hope this helps and good luck!

you'd have to learn how to cook! And eat a lot of Indian food.

It used to be impossible to become a vegan before they added "as far as is possible and practical" to the definition.

Did you know that was added later?

You're only talking about diet too and it's a LOT more than just diet.

Take your time and build a list of the foods you'll need to eat to allow for the full range of nutrients you need. Then also take some time to put together a list of things in your life you need to exclude because they come from animals of include ingredients derived from animals.

It's a daunting task that not many can accomplish. I wish you the best of luck though!

to really become vegan you have to look deeper than that....even into cosmetics, soaps, and other daily items. From the people I know that are vegan they will tell you that it is hardest at first until you establish a routine and find out what is and is not ethically appropriate. The best advice I got was that if I ever decided to go for it, to take a few items a week, and find an alternate. It's much less overwhelming and makes the transition much easier.

yes. its very hard. not only the food, but you also have to think about makeup and other products. I'm vegan, and have been for a little over a year, before i was vegatarian. The first few months of being vegan was H-LL, but it got better. Just expect to hear some critics running there mouth. Don't worry, it's not that bad once you get used to it.

Yes I am vegetarian and I'm currently trying to cut out milk from my entire diet, but since a lot of my meals include cheese it is very difficult, but I have started by switching my actual milk for cereal for example to soya milk. That wasn't diffiult at all because I like the taste and milk never made up much of my diet anyway. But since I becaome vegetarian I had to substitute egges and cheese for meat protein. I am actually only against milk, I can't find guilt in eating eggs, but milk is actually a quite horrific process, being a chocaholic it isn't easy and I guess I'm just going to have to switch to soya cheese *blergh* but it's for the animals, so I'll try.

You are too focus on what you can't eat rather that what you can. Start slowly. 3 years ago found out I had Celiac Sprue Disease(severe from of Gluten allergy) also 50+ more food allergies. It can be overwhelming. It takes time to adjust, read labels to find the foods that work for you. Realize that whole grains, fresh fruits & veggies are VEGAN naturally it's what we do with them that changes that.
Lots of luck.

Slainté(to your health)

It's not as hard as you think, it just takes time to get used to. I would advise staying away from most processed foods, since usually they will have some egg or milk derivatives.

Here's a sample of what I might eat in a day:

Breakfast - cereal with rice/almond/soy milk, banana, orange juice

Snack - walnuts, sunflower seeds

Lunch - PB&J, pita chips and salsa

Snack - apple or orange

Dinner - Burritos (made w/ beans, rice, tomatoes, etc) and steamed veggies

Might not be the most nutritionally sound of diets, but it might give you some ideas.

I'm not a vegan (I'm a strict vegetarian), so I can't help you with the other stuff. Leather alternatives usually aren't too hard to find, and there are several sites that list which soaps, toothpaste, etc. are vegan.

NO lol

It's easy! You just have to have the right motivation, and know where to shop.

I have vegan cheese, vegan everything pratically, and they all taste great. I have soy milk, instead of milk.

It's only impossible for those who lack willpower..
