Veganism (also strict or pure vegetarianism) is a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.Vegans do not use or consume animal products of any kind. The most common reasons for becoming a vegan are ethical commitment or moral convictions concerning animal rights, the environment, or human health, and spiritual or religious concerns.Of particular concern are the practices involved in factory farming and animal testing, and the intensive use of land and other resources required for animal farming.
The word vegan, pronounced /?vi?g?n/,was originally derived from "vegetarian" in 1944 when Elsie Shrigley and Donald Watson, FRUSTRATED the term "vegetarianism" had come to include the eating of dairy products, egg, fish, etc .He founded the UK Vegan Society. They combined the first three and last two letters of vegetarian to form "vegan", which they saw as "the beginning and end of vegetarian".The British Vegan Society defines veganism in this way:
The word "veganism" denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, manipulation of breeds, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals. Other vegan societies use similar definitions now.
Being vegan, it means you cannot eat ANY animal products. It also depends on how 'vegan' you plan to be. Do you plan to just follow the vegan diet, which excludes ALL animal products or a full-on vegan which excludes the use of ANYTHING animal related. Being full-on vegan means you need to exclude clothes from animal, basic materials from animal, food from animals. Anything and everything. Here is a website that may help :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veganism
vegans have to avoid anything that coems from an animal source...dairy products as well. So just stick to whole garins, fruits, veggies etc
And remember that 'Hardcore' vegans aren't allowed to drive through towns with the word 'ham' in their name...

From what I've been told, being vegan involves more than food.. Not only is there a list of what you cannot eat, but also what you cannot own or something like that.. basically anything tha involves any animal exploitation is not allowed in veganism. that includes food, clothes, vanity products, furniture, etc. You get the idea..
A vegan diet isn't easy to do. I have a lot of respect for anyone that can really do it, but you have to look hard at what you are eating. Even something as harmless as a jar of nuts can be unacceptable because some companies use gelatin in the manufacturing stage to help bind seasonings to the nuts.
There's a lot to consider. Like anything else, you have to take a first step, and you have by trying to cut out meats. Vegan, on the other hand, is far different, and typically requires that you understand foods and ingredients in a fairly thorough way to avoid ANY animal product or derivative. So go little by little.
