Why is it that mass produced food are always processed, and filled with too much salt, sugar, and chemicals?!
Another thing, how can I tell people that I only eat organic, unprocesses foods, that don't contain animal or animal products? Because everyone I know is trying to get me to eat these foods and dishes and believe my 'veganism' is some disease that must be cured.
Answers: I'm vegan, and I try to eat organic unprocessed foods... but have found that I must go to a "health food" store, or one of those hippie farms. Now there's nothing wrong, it's just expensive. But I'm wondering why the FDA is approving all these additives to be put in to foods when it's proven to be unhealthy?

I'm vegan too, and I totally understand where you are coming from.
All those salts, processing, and chemicals are added in order to add an 'appealing' color and taste to foods. A lot of foods, in their natural state, are unappealing physically and pallete-wise to the consumer. But by adding chemicals and such, the producer is able to modify the color to be aesthetic, and we all know how labeling and appearance can affect a purchase.
A good way to ensure that you are only eating unprocessed foods that are animal-free is to be familiar with ingredients and research animal byproduct terms so that you will know what they are when you see them on an ingredient label. Or you could just forgo all that completely, and go 'raw' (by eating foods as close to their physical natures as possible).
It is a challenge to be vegan, but you are doing yourself and the environment a huge favor in being one. SO anything that is good for one's health is worth the extra effort.
Most people just don't understand how someone can conscientiously choose to live animal-free because most people are unaware of exactly what a vegan is. They are raised on animal products, and thus they do not know any different. They can not fathom a life without animal consumption. Most of this is out of fear and a lack of information.
But it only takes one person, like yourself, to educate them and show them that one can live healthy (and healthier) by adopting an animal-free consumption lifestyle. So whenever someone crosses you about your veganism, have compassion for them, and try to educate them. Perhaps you will have changed someone's perceptions for the better!
Kudos to you for being vegan! : )
all that stuff is added to make food taste better and last longer, but most stuff doesn't taste as good as it did when I was a kid.
you might have to try growing your own fruit and veggies
Veganism is not a disease, forcing that opinion on others as some vegans I know do is.(a mental one)
As for the FDA, I have serious doubts as to them caring a rat's a** about anyones health so long as the money for approval keeps rolling in. They have approved drug after drug from major pharm. companies with little or no testing in the real world. But, hey what's a few dead people when the monies flowing, right?
Salt and sugar for taste, chemicals to enhance the quality (like vitamins that are added to food) and for preservation. By the way, the FDA approves any additive as long as it is safe for use. As soon as evidence to the contrary is presented (scientific methods not anecdotal indormation) then it is dispproved or retested or altered before it can be used again. Not all additives are harmful too.
Sorry but unless you pick your own food or eat directly off the vine so to speak, ALL foods are processed even if the processing involves nothing more than washing it with clean water, a cleaning process. There is also a simple selection process where foods (in your case fruits and veggies) are classified (size, weight, quality for marketing purposes) and discarded (unfit for consumption or deformed) then bagged/boxed or packaged for delivery to retailers or end users.
Ola your question is complicated but it means a friend passed me this link http://www.bobool.com/Mesothelioma.php very good beyond most cn discovers many things on your health
I hope you enjoy
Why? Because it keeps longer on the supermarket shelf, for one thing - that's a huge plus for both manufacturers and supermarket owners. For another, it's much cheaper to produce foods that contain a lot of sugar, salt, flavour-enhancers. emulsifiers and preservatives, instead of the ingredients that you're really buying the product for.
Organic/unprocessed foods cost slightly more to produce, have a much lower public demand, and the producers also feel that they can charge more for what may be seen as a luxury item.
...to increse the shelf life of those foods. Some of those foods are unhealthy to eat
Sometimes I hesitate to answer in this way (worry that get thumb down or get deleted-you can see that now).
The pitfalls of pursuing a "real" vegetarian diet create a whole, natural fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains. A modern vegetarian diet emphasizes food grown in harmony with Nature by organic farmer, on good soils, ripened naturally, and prepare with an attitude of Love. Such food carries highest prana and consciousness. (In this context by you “knowingly suffers” that dairy farming, egg and vegetables are grown liable to be unkind, is not vegetarian!).
***A modern vegetarian diet does not include junk food, excessive spicy or salty, fried food, while flour, white sugar, and other forms that unnaturally stimulate your blood sugar or your mind (one reason why modern dairy milk involve unkindness and contains excessive hormones are not sacred, not suitable as vegetarian). It avoids meat, fish, egg, alcohol, highly caffeinated beverages, and often garlic and onion as well (as garlic/onion induces one’s sexual desire). Vegetarians often eat their plate “clean”, no remains, no leftover, no wastage.
In Ayurveda it is established that certain foods affect the qualities of the mind in particular ways. These qualities or state of mind are latent in everyone. Vegetarian-by philosophy...state of mind is clear, peaceful, and harmonious. It is typified by the pure-living intuition, conscience and spiritual aspirant.
Diet influences the state of mind, and the state of mind influences the diet choice, there into Self Realization (Modus Operandi).
because the public is given what they want and what they want is sweet foods and salty foods and they want the food to last forever.....
"Food" and agribusiness giants want to maintain their bottom line, pure and simple.
There has also been lobbying to the government from the fast food industry.
That's why "real" vegetarianism (and veganism) works for betterment of entire society. We should educate our family, friends and public.

Most of these chemicals are added for the convenience of either the farmer, manufacturer or store. They make the product either last longer or taste (and thus sell) better. They are not proven to be unsafe, but there are some lingering doubts, so it may be a good idea to avoid them when possible.
