"Vegetarians are all anemic"?!
I'd like to disprove it..
Tell it to the redcross volunteer who checked MY iron yesterday and gave me the green light to donate (I haven't eaten meat in 17 years)..
WOOT!! I'm a blood donor!!
Answers: Ever heard this before..

Well, i passed the 50 blood donations landmark 2 years ago and donated bone marrow in late 2007.
Veggie for 28 years.
No one has ever questioned my iron levels
correct iron levels are easy to achieve on a veggie diet
Congratulations on being a blood donor, its yet another good decision in your life ;-)
If people want to read about Iron on a veggie diet they can do so here:
http://www.vegsoc.org/info/iron.html
The article also contains this statement "Iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutritional problem both in Britain and worldwide"....and as veggies are in a minority I guess than means iron defficiency its a global problem for a typical meat-diet...who would of thought eh ?
It also contains this statement:
"Despite iron from plant foods being less readily absorbed research has shown that vegetarians are no more likely to suffer from iron deficiency than non-vegetarians. Draper & Wheeler (1989) have stated there is no indication of increased prevalence of iron deficiency amongst vegetarians. Anderson (1981) found the iron status of long-term vegetarian women to be adequate, despite a high intake of fibre and phytate"
If people still want to say veggies have a problem with iron levels, good luck to them. The world is full of people who want to argue the world is flat.
eg, I've just had an email from someone in this forum that said vegetarians NEED to eat Quorn or Tofu. You have to laugh eh ?
Hey bragger :-)
As you know, I'm quite unsuccessful in my vegetarianism, but congrats to you and your health!
I have the same experience every quarter when I go to give blood. I have a huge iron content. Like you I am long term Veggie-Vegan.
Thaks for being a Blood Donor!!!!
GIVE LIFE, DONATE BLOOD

"Vegetarians are all anemic"
This another of the common myths about vegetarianism. I get the distinct impression that they even teach this in American schools.
I am also Vegetarian and also give blood, never had iron problems either
I was anaemic as a veggie. I was anaemic before that, too, while eating tons of meat. I stopped being anaemic while being a vegetarian. My iron levels are still fine - I have yearly blood tests for another medical condition.
Why would anyone say that? What would make someone think they had the right to say that, or the expertise? Grr. I can't believe how thick some people are.
I agree... w00t 4 dOn0rZ!!!!!!1!1!11!!one!!1!
I do double red cell donations every four months. You actually have to have higher iron levels for this than a normal donation or they won't allow you to do it. I had been a vegetarian for about 3 months the last time I donated (my iron levels were fine), and I'm scheduled to donate again at the end of this month.
.........................................
From Carter BloodCare (where I usually donate):
Double Red Cell Collection (2RBC)
Unlike a traditional whole blood donation, Double Red Cell Collection (2RBC) allows the donor to safely give two units of red blood cells, instead of just one. The process separates blood into its components while it is being drawn. Because only red blood cells are being collected, enough can be collected for two red cell transfusions. The remaining components are returned to the donor. The collection procedure takes just 20 minutes longer than a whole blood donation and can be performed every four months. 2RBC donors must meet certain height and weight requirements, as well as routine donor criteria:
Males: Must weigh at least 130 lbs. and be 5'1" or taller.
Females: Must weigh at least 150 lbs. and be 5'5" or taller.
Hi, Shelly.
I haven't been anemic since I was 13 years old, and I was still eating meat back then. Since I have become vegetarian and subsequently vegan I haven't had any problems with anemia. I don't take any iron supplements, I just take a B12 supplement since I'm breastfeeding. I get blood work and a physical every single year and I've never been healthier :)
People who attempt to become vegetarians with no knowledge of nutrition can easily become anemic.
I've been vegan for nine years and never had issues with iron. I don't donate blood, but my sister is a vegan and she regularly does.
I know lots of healthy vegetarians as well.
I'm anemic.
Probably made the situation worse by being vegetarian and not eating right.
But hey, oh well.
Well you probably actually know about what you need to eat, thats my guess........
how do you know you have not ate meat in 17 years
