Vegetarianism?is it worth it...?!

Question: I have been a vegetarian for over four years now....i'm 17 and I was just wondering do people not care about animals?
Their quality of life?
When buying meat does it make any difference to you if organic or farmed meat?
Opinons please!!
Do people not feel guilty that they're eatting something that once lived not so long ago...??
And do people think that been a vegetarian makes no difference to the amount of animals been killed every year??

I would be grateful if vegetarians and non-vegetarians would express their opinons..?!

i am a vegetarian since i was 13 . (now i'm 29 by the way).
and i agree totally with you.
and if people would just check some new researces about how the human digestive trakt was not made for eating meat, but vegetables, they would think twice before thir next meal.
animals who are made to be meat eaters have totally different bodies and metabolism and teeth then those who are supposed to eat vegetables.
we as humans have the whole sistem made for eating vegetables. and it is finaly even scientificaly proved recently. sure ,some of the scintists dont agree yet but they can neither give any prove that the research isnt right.
so, it is not only for being sentimental. it is also about care for out health .
let jusr remind ourselves about how many illness we can contract from eating meat of a contaminated animal.
H5N1 birds, then cows, pigs, etc.....
but from eating vege food there is no such a high risk as from eating meet these days .

so, what to say for the end. we all have the choice. and by force there is nothing we can do. nor would we want to force someone to become a vegetarian.
i am not judgemental about anything, so i will keep my openmindness even when it comes to this subject that means to me alot.
we choosed our way. for the others ,only we can do is to provide them some knowledge but-is up to them to be free and choose.

no vegetarians are ******* go vegan

as far as i m concerned love animals, don't eat them

Plants live as well, your point is mute.

Don't insinuate that just because someone eats meat (like we are genetically and physically made to do, i.e. molars and canines) that they don't care about animals or their quality of life.

Depending on where you go in the world the food changes. And trust me in Asia they do eat dogs and cats and in India cows are sacred. What is stagnant is the fact that world-wide people do eat meat, not all but the majority of people.

That nerve differance between plants and animals has been used by vegans since I remember. If you have ever taken biology you clearly know that plant cells and animals cells have some similarities and clear differences. What is certain is plants DO feel pain similarly to how our nerves bring the pain sensation to our brains. There have been numerous studies: http://www.department13designs.com/vegan... there's one.

Well i've always been a meat-eater.. but one day i realised it was wrong so i became vegetarian, but it didnt last that long. After a couple of months I quit because I realised that it wasn't necessery because the animals are made to be eaten. I would never eat a dog or cat.. Or anything really extreme, I just stick to the basics: Chicken and the ocassional Burger.

well, i am vegetarian, and am 13. I do it because i saw something horrible involving animals. I think it is worth it in the long run. Hope I could Help!

me personally, eat what you want!

I care about animals; but i don't impose what someone else should eat.

it goes in (the body) and then comes back out again.

Each person should pay attention to the content of their meal and their health status: diabetics; high cholesterol; blood pressure; celiacs etc.

Humans were designed to consume meat. For example, vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animals products.

All animals die and that's okay. I could see having a problem with their quality of life, and possibly with raising them just to eat them, but we are omnivores. What do you expect?

Depends on what you think of. If you eat meat only, then you are killing lots of livestock. If you eat vegetables only, then you are killing lots of plants. But the fact is both livestock and plants are living thing. So it depends on what you think of it.

I like both meat and non-meat foods. Both are good to me, it's just a matter of opinion and no, it doesn't make a difference whether it's organic or farm raised. Also, it's again, a matter of opinion good for you, but really, it's ALL opinion.

It is a personal choice.

Some do, some don't, some care about some animals, some care about others. Some care about animals and eath them anyway. Some don't care about people. As someone mentioned, plants are alive, too.

And some vegetarians are vegetarians for reasons other than animal welfare. The Small Planet eco-vegetarians, the health vegetarians, religious vegetarians, etc.

I am vegetarian. I know lots of meat-eaters, though, and I believe it is an intensely personal ethic - what you eat.

Being a vegetarian will not change the meat industry in any significant way. Be a veg if you want to, and if that's what works for your lifestyle, but don't expect it to change the world.

Yes, buying organic, free-range meat and poultry makes a huge difference. Not only are those animals raised properly and humanely, but the meat that comes from them is healthier for you. There are no hormones, no chemicals, no genetic modifications, there are no diseases being spread (mad cow, etc.). This will make the difference. The mass-producing non-organic meat industry will be forced to change their ways if more people buy organic. It's much more effective, because there are very few non-meat eaters, but very many meat eaters. If the meat eaters shopped smarter, then some change could come about. The non-meat eaters are an insignificant population that won't gain a loud enough voice.

I prefer to hunt my own game.

Because if I don't shoot these critters - they will eat the crops that YOU like to eat.

ima vegetarian mainly due to the fact that mean of any kinda disgusts me: the shape , the texture the taste! yuk! i also love animals and allthough i was not always vegi even as a child i only ate chicken as i felt it was the least mean like substance.
i would love to think that not eating mean helps reduce the amount of animals slaughtered each year but sadly we're a bit far from success. but yes, to asnwer your question, i do think its worth it! XD

Personally, I've tried to go vegetarian, but It's hard. Plus to make up for the lack of nutrition that meat actually provides for us, it costs more and you have to make sure you intake a good amount. I do feel bad when I think about what I'm eating and how it was killed, but man has been omnivores for a long time (even though we started out as herbivores) and it's just kind of how things work. I know the way food gets to us is inhumane. Now I'm just starting to go in a circle, so I will end with that.

im vegetarian and im 17 too!! lol :)
i definitely would feel guilty eating meat. i stopped when i was in like 2nd grade and havent eaten it since.
personally im vegetarian because i dont see why people need to take the life of animals just to eat them. we have other food that we can live off of and it doesnt seem fair to end somethings life just for our pleasure. (lol im kind of bad at explaining it so im not sure how much sense that makes)
i dont really have a problem with people eating meat. its not really any of my business and they can do what they want. it really gets on my nerves though because people always bug me about why i dont eat it. everyone always says how it doesnt make a difference anyway and pretty much act like im stupid for my decision.
im really not sure how much of a difference it makes to the amount of animals that are killed. there are a lot of vegetarians in the world though so im guessing that it must have some impact

You've raised some interesting questions. I am a hypocritical meat eater. I find it difficult to eat meat from an animal that I "Knew" (fed, petted or cared for). yet I don't have a big problem with anonymous meat.

I feel terrible about the awful conditions in feedlots and factory farms though. So my latest move was to purchase half of a cow from the family of a friend. The steer was raised in beautiful surroundings, had good feed and never received hormones or antibiotics.

I also try to get my eggs from friends with free range chickens. The supply is low this time of year though. My closest friend never eats the hens that provide the eggs. So I have been known to eat store bought chicken and feel bad about it.

I have a bit of a lactose intolerance problem, so I don't drink much milk unless it is Lactaid. Usually I drink Silk (soy).

It is a healthier lifestyle to be a vegetarian, and it is easier on the planet. I wish I had the self-discipline my son does in these matters. The fewer people that eat meat, the better off the environment and animal life would be.

I think that organic foods are nearly always preferable to processed or chemically polluted foods, but they are sometimes too expensive for my budget.

Cats and dogs are pets in our culture. I love my pets. Pets are "People" so I could never eat them. I may be a carnivore, but I am NOT a cannibal!

God put animals on this earth so we could eat them. Look it up in the bible. It IS wrong though when you kill animals for sport. Also, one vegitarian doesn't change anything because the company doesn't KNOW you stopped eating meat. They probably don't even care. If its already dead it's not going to come alive again, your not SAVING animals. They have farms where all the animals on it are destined to this fate and their not going to change it. They don't get money from YOU eating it, they get money from the store BUYING it. If you think that the store won't order as much, your wrong. 1st because they ALWAYS need extra, and second becauseThe company will sell it to a different store and if no one wants to buy it then they will just bring it to their family. They will make how much everyone needs, and then some. They will not stop doing that. What if some one who worked for a store accidentally dropped all the meat? They'd buy more. They make more just incase stuff like that happens. They willl ALWAYS MAKE EXTRA AND THEY WILL ALWAYS MAKE AS MUCH AS THAT STORE NEEDS TO STOCK ITS SHELVES, AND THEN SOME!! NOT feed the people. The stores don't give a crap how many people actually BUY it and eat it,they just want money and their store to look attractive. That means full shelves. thay just need to stock their shelves. Also, being Vegitarian isn't healthy for you. You lack important vitamins and minerals. Especially proteins. It slowly deteriorates your body. My friend is a Veggie person and she faints almost every day in the locker room after gym class. Normally we can get her back up but sometimes we can't. We worry about her. If you wan to be a Vegitarian I really don't care, if thats what you wanna do do it! I'll be happy for you! Good Luck and Hope my Opinion helped!

i think that fur and leather are unnessisary, but eating cows and chickens are alright because I like variety in food. Sometimes i only eat vegetables and other days only meat. It does not make any difference to me whether meat is organic or not (i've never even seen organic meat for sale before). I really do not think about whether it was alive before. Honestly i do not think vegetarians make a difference in the meat slaughtering industry, because such a vast majority of people eat meat (almost everyone)..

Sorry if i offended anyone.. really did not mean to.

Well eating meat and other living things is part of nature and our only way to live. Animals eat animals. Vegetarians eat fruits and vegetables, they are living. Therefore you are killing plants, you are killing living things. And for any christian vegatarians that are against eating meat, Jesus ate meat, Jesus a perfect man, the son of god ate meat, and it wasnt a sin. Why? Because God put animals on this earth for many reasons and one of them is for humans to eat.

I want to believe that if they showed real pictures of today's "farmed" animals on the news for all to see that there would be widespread outrage and boycotting -- or at least a decline in consumption. I don't think it's naive to believe that such images would evoke compassion from many people, especially if modern agricultural practices became common knowledge. Sadly, I fear that it will come to an outbreak of mad cow disease or the like for many people to learn the truth.

That's no reason to give up, though. Without people continuing to make changes to their habits and beliefs, the cause would be lost. Everyone's efforts count -- at least, that's what I believe.

What is the reason you are vegetarian? Do you really care about the animals or is it a fad? You seem a little insecure as to why you don't eat meat. There is nothing wrong either with not eating it because you don't feel like it. Everyone has a different reason. I don't necessarily do it for the animals..but because I hate the way I feel after I eat it! I feel tired and bloated. But, yes I do get a little grossed out of how they kill animals and just the fact that IT IS dead decomposing flesh.....

I think that goin vegetarian is totally worht it. There are so many vegetarian options these days, that even your school should have a couple of options. I have been a vegeatrian all my life, and I believe that I will never go back to meat. I think that if I ate meat, I would feel very badly about it, and I wouldn't do it again. A lot of people say that once you eat meat, you would miss it to much to go vegetarian. That is such a debatable topic, that many of the fights I have been in have been caused by it. People eat so much meat, that every one vegetarian makes a difference. And if you have to eat meat, I would definately say eat orgainc so that ht eanimals aren't raised in such horribe condtions!\
Hope this is helpful!

The question of wheather people care or not depends on each persons ethics. Some do and others don't. Most people have a skewed view when it comes to livestock and have little to no concern for them while having complete concern for domestic animals. I personally care for all animals and their quality of life.

When I buy meat for my roomate or friends I always buy organic free range meats. The least I can do is buy from those who try to give these animals a good life while they are alive.

Most people don't feel guilty about it because they have always been taught that you need food to live and most people are happy living with that thought process. Some independant thinkers question it and do something about it. Then there are those who know better and just don't care.

I think being a vegetarian makes a world of difference. Each person makes a small dent and if that is what it takes to save an animal or two then it's worth it. The vegetarian population has spurted from 1% to 3.1 % in the past 10 years. This increase shows that there is some progress. Plus, you have a clear concience knowing that you aren't killing anything or anyone.

I don't think they do care about animals, because if they did, they would care about what they go through to get to their plate, and not eat them.
They say "it's the way of life" "god made it that way".
Those excuses are cop-outs.....they should just say it already "I don't care enough about animals to not eat them."

And they eat cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and not dogs and cats, because they somehow can't make the connection. That they are ALL living things, regardless of whether or not they're your pet, or a farm animal.

And yes plants have feelings, but they can't run from me. And my philosophy is, if it can run from me, I'm not going to eat it.

God gave us food here on the earth. There only savages that kill the animals for there own good. No. Its beastly in the bad way. Meaning ; God gave us food here already,We don't need to ask for more then we were recived,We can fill our stomaches with what God is suppling us with, How would you feel if your life was a year at the most, Just because people wanted to eat you?

im a non-vegetarion. however u spell it. i love meat. meat makes u stronger and tougher. that is just how the food chain works. god made it that way!!!!!!!!
