Any good japanese vegetarian dishes?!


Question: does anybody have any suggestions on any good japanese vegetarian dishes? i know there is hardly any japanese food that is veggie... but how about modifying some non-veg meals and turning them vegetarian? adding a little tofu? any ideas?

Pay no attention to the self-proclaimed experts on what the Japanese think and do. They are the section's trolls. As you can see, and as you will see in most of their answers, their agenda revolves around encouraging people to eat meat. They cannot stand you vegetarians and vegans.

Here are a few recipes to get you started. You'll notice, not so coincidentally, that NONE of them have any animal flesh in them:

Watch out for dishes that look vegetarian, like agadeshi tofu and miso soup, or even the sauce that comes with veggie tempura, they often have benito flakes (fish flakes). Even the soy sauce on the table at Japanese restaurants has benito mixed in.

Try some wholesome Japanese carrots.

The Japanese self-identify as vegetarians. They are largely pesco-vegetarians. They don't give a rip about what your definition of vegetarian is ... they are vegetarians. 127 million people can't be wrong. Plus they have the world's healthiest diet and live the longest.

They would be flexitarian vegetarians. So just take their recipes and don't put in anything you don't want to eat. That's not very hard.

EDIT: And Flexitarian Vegan is correct. Japanese carrots are especially wholesome since they are fertilized with fish entrails. And they are easy to carry in your purse for a quick snack.

They are all good and they are ALL vegetarian .. just not YOUR idea of vegetarian. They are a nation of flexitarian vegetarians. Might be a few strict vegetarians but not many or not as fanatical as here in the west. The Japanese wouldn't put up with that kind of nonsense. Leave out what you don't want. Too bad you are a strict vegetarian Japanese cuisine is one of the great cusines in the world.

How difficult is it to replace meat/fish or whatever in japanese food with vegetables that you have to ask? I don't mean to ridicule you but it seems that with a bit of common sense, you could have figured this one out on your own.
Observation: In the general food and drink section, the tone is more of sharing recipes, food joints, and comparison fo various foo and drinks (which is the best, which is better, what to eat in a certain city etc etc). In the V&V section, it is more of a "what can I or not eat" or "am I allowed..." or "am I a vegetarian if... " or the becoming more common, moral and ethical debate about V&V vs omnis. the more I read the V&V section, the more i find the V&V principle to be self limiting, obssessive to the point of fanaticism, narrow minded (no meat or fish period) and intolerant. There ar exeptions of course, but the vast majority of those who post are falling into this category. Becoming more robotic and naive conformists to the AR/PETA/V&V mantra than free thinking individuals.
