What do you think of this free range chicken campaign?!

Question: I think its good but I can see both sides of the story- people cant afford to pay for free range (although it is only a couple of quid extra, which people wouldnt think twice about if it was say a take away or fags). I think the chickens have awful lives and yes they do only live for 39 days but it is still an awful way to live. I back the campaign any way!

I have been buying free range chickens and eggs for years. It makes me sick how we treat the animals we use for meat. I have now found some other free range meat products in our local supermarket (pork and sausages) and will be buying them in the future, despite the fact they use too much packaging for their products. Oh well, we can't have it all ways can we? I would like to hope that other consumers will follow suit. The recent publicity and Jamie Oliver's show tonight, I think will give food for thought. (pardon the pun) We don't seem to mind paying through the nose for convenience food. To feed a family of four adult sized people one meal is between £4-£6. That's the average price for a free range chicken. I don't need to change the way I shop as I'm already there but I back this all the way too.

Free range chickens are campaigning now? What is it they are wanting? Maybe they are picketing to free their caged brothers. I think its great.

It’s good that your backing the campaign, I would love to see legislation that bans factory farming. However there are a number of problems with free range. Free range animal still endure the same transport and slaughter as intensive birds, meaning they meet a traumatic end, I want no part of this at all so I don’t eat any animal products.

Also free range takes up a hell of a lot more land, if we switch our current poultry system in the UK to free range we will need and extra 300,000 square miles – where is this going to come from?

In summery Hugh did a great job and it’s a step in the right direction, but there is the option of not eating animals at all and this important point is always missing from the debate.

funny stuff...ever see the damage that ONE weasel or mink can do to "free range" chickens? so, say a critter sets up shop killing chickens for funsies, can it be killed? or do you live trap it and haul it to the neighbors chicken ranch hee hee

I think we should fight for an end to cruelty, not accept it in a slightly milder form.
