Does this kind of stunt make you lose respect for PETA?!

Question: http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/01/pe...

Now I am an AR sympathiser - I wish I had the will power to be vegan and I support such direct action groups as the ALF, but this just undermines credibility, and will do nothing to encourage mainstream support. In fact it just looks like someone who is anti AR taking the piss in a tasteless way.

Ugh. I do not support PETA.

This more than illustrates why.

Actually this is something I wrote to a friend recently, this more than illustrates how I feel about PETA:

"I am a vegan but I don't agree with everything PETA does, I think their intentions were in the right place at the start of PETA (and they had in fact done a lot for animal welfare at the time) but they are becoming increasingly irrelevant because of their increasingly silly tactics.

Writhing around naked in fake blood makes vegetarians and vegans look like idiots rather than really promote an idea intelligently. Having celebrities like Pamela Anderson as spokespeople also does not paint a good picture for PETA. On top of it all, PETA has gotten too big for its britches, they have become their own profit machine... they gladly take donations from people, and yet I feel like they don't do much with it at all...

Also, I find it hurtful that they generalize and stereotype farmers, ranchers, dairies (I am vegan myself but I have an aunt that owns a dairy farm and I have NEVER seen her do anything despicable, she is a very wonderful and caring woman... she does not grind up or kill or make male calves into veal, etc). I feel like they will misconstrue anything, they will push any sort of propaganda, just to dissuade people from eating meat or wearing fur, without regard for facts.

Many of their videos are disgusting to me, I don't like to watch them. I find them to be unfounded in many claims (why is it that they are willing to jump all over a tiny study that linked eating meat with erectile dysfunction, but will not acknowledge the hundreds of studies that show that soy products can be harmful for your health in excess?). I just think that they are too focused on pushing their ideology and pushing their agenda, and will stop at nothing to do so.

I also do not like them targeting children with oftentimes offensive or disgusting ad campaigns. I am raising my daughter meat-free but I would probably send PETA a nice long angry email if they dared to give my baby girl one of their "meat is murder" fliers, where they show graphic pictures and have things written there like "baby cows are taken from their mommies - would you like to be taken from your mommy? Their mommies are killed"... I mean, this is the stuff of nightmares.

Above all they don't necessarily let people decide for themselves, they just push and push and push the lifestyle on people. I think that they have actually made animal rights as a whole look ridiculous as of late, and have painted vegetarians and vegans in a bad light (as ignorant extremists and agenda-pushers).

I do support animal rights but not PETA... and I refuse to use any of their web pages as evidence to argue pro-vegan stances. I did my own research, I have pored through hundreds of medical articles and books and have made my OWN opinion (and have invalidated many of PETA's extreme claims, which make them sound stupid). There is much benefit in being vegan, there is much good that comes from it, but by exaggeration tactics and their propaganda, agenda-pushing tactics they invalidate the evidence they use."

I dont think PETA much cares about "mainstream" support.

Personally, I think they went around the bend back in the 80's.

I prefer to think people ARE more important than animals.

I sure dont see PETA folks lining up to take the place of the animals that get tested on and unless and until they do, they'll remain a "kooky fringe group" for me.

Ranked right up there with Al Sharpton.

SHOW ME THE DOWNWARD THUMBS!

Yes that stunt loses alot of respect from me!!!!
my mom told me about that yesterday, i think that is riduculous......not trying to be mean but this man KILLED AND ATE HIS WIFE!!!!!!! that is 100% disgusting 100% wrong!
I am a vegetarian and i cannot believe PETA would do such a thing.

I hope i helped!

The funny thing about PETA is they never do anything ethical...im an animal lover and have absolutely no use for PETA...NONE..and i agree with supawoop....when something happens and PETA shows up....it loses credibility...just like when there's a racially motivated incident and Al Sharpton shows up...loses credibility!

PETA is way out there, Keep it to yourself PETA.

P eople

Nop, that stunt did not make me lose respect for PETA because I have lost all respect for PETA many many years ago...this just reinforces the notion that it was a good decision

Ok, some of PETA's campaigns really bug me--like I am not a huge fan of their lettuce girls or their other nude/near nude women.

But just urging a prison go to a vegetarian diet? Doesn't bug me at all. There' isn't a constitutionally protected right to eat meat, vegetarian foods would be way cheaper in bulk than meat products, and a vegetarian diet would probably be way healthier then the low quality meat that I would guess is served in prisons. Also, it would probably make serving prisoners a lot easier--you could serve pretty much everyone the same veggie meal without violating religious principles or many health based concerns of various prisoners. Seems like a great idea to me.

And yeah, sure, they compared what this guy did to his wife to what is done to animals. Well, the same things ARE done to animals that were done to this guys wife. Whether you think doing it to an animals is as bad as doing it to a person is a personal judgment call. But even if you value humans over other animals, that doesn't mean that animals aren't subjected to the same horrible things that this woman was subjected to.

Yes, but it doesn't surprise me. They've been a little off lately (since i started paying attention, actually) with the Olsen twins website, the personal attacks on celebrities, etc. That makes them look more like loonie radicals than a serious organization...

PETA are crazy and stupid.

People
Eating
Tasty
Animals.

I don't approve of using shock tactics to gain someones attention or support on any issue. I do believe, however, that too many people have chosen to look the other way when it involves the murdering of animals for gluttonous human consumption. The act of this deranged man is, in many ways, no different than the holocaust that thousands of innocent, helpless animals are forced to confront each horrific day of their pathetic lives. PETA is trying to reach those very people who refuse to let the the ugliness of slaughter enter their main stream of consciousness. They are aware that they could never handle the raw, uncensored reality involved. One thing for certain.....if these same people were forced to witness the initial preparation of their tender veal dinner, they would opt to eat nothing but plain cheerios for the duration of their natural lives. Kudos to PETA!

Of course not . . . I never had any respect for PETA in the first place. They continue to do great damage to the credibility of legitimate and rational AR activists. But they suck in a lot of money and that is their focus. If you notice they appeal to the irrational and impulsive "youngsters" and adults who haven't matured.

I don't have respect for PETA so I can't lose any.

They are a group of hypocrites, from Newburg on down through the ranks. Where's everybody's $$$ going that they have to kill the animals they take in as opposed to housing and feeding them? I bet they drive nice cars and have nice houses in the nice part of town t6hough. ;-)

I don't see the big deal. To some, a living being is a living being. Only we're cocky enough to think we're better than everything and everyone else. I don't see what's so shocking about this "stunt".
