What is the real health advantages of an organic banana over a non-organic banana?!

Question: My store just recently offered them, but they're almost twice the price. What is the advantage, specifically, when it comes to an item like a banana?

Organic banana = you will add 5 - 7 years to your life

Non-organic banana = you will add 500 - 600 different chemicals, pesticides and pollutants into your body

Here you go:

For the record the FDA defines a pesticide thusly:

"The term pesticide includes many kinds of ingredients used in products, such as insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, insect repellants, weed killers, antimicrobials, and swimming pool chemicals, which are designed to prevent, destroy, repel, or reduce pests of any sort."

(I would like to assert that I am not a pest, despite what’s apparently on my food, and what my friends and family may think on occasion.)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ran nearly 51,000 tests on 44 fruits and veggies between 2000 and 2004. Their data was compiled by the Environmental Working Group, and showed that conventionally-grown apples ranked second worst for pesticide contamination. 94% of all apples sampled were contaminated with an average of 3 different pesticides, at a total average of almost 1 part per million (ppm).

Potatoes had the highest contamination level – 1.7 ppm on average, with over 80% of the potatoes tested having some detectable levels. I don’t like eating potatoes anyway, so I’m not too non-plused about that. But what about those yummy, yummy peaches we all scoff during the summer if we possibly can?

All I can say is “Put the peach down!”

Well, there are fewer chemicals on them, so therefore healthier.

Lack of pesticides.

no pesticides, higher vitamin concentration and better taste

Very little tbh. Just the fact that genetically modified and things surrounding it are a good way to capitalize on being "angelic" and wholesome.

Personally, I think it's all just a big scam besides that they taste better and have less chemicals. I suppose that makes us happier though. Happier is a good thing.

Because organic food spoils faster.

You pay extra to have the assurance that your bananas aren't sprayed with chemical pesticides, which the government permits to be sprayed on conventional (non-organic) produce. The amount that is legally allowed by the government IS harmful to people. In fact most of these pesticides are labeled as toxic. Conventional farmers and their families are far more likely to have cancer and other illnesses than organic farmers or even anyone else in American society (and that is obviously linked to the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides).

It also means that sustainable farming means were used, and that the bananas were grown in a way that impacted the environment least (chemical fertilizers, especially nitrite fertilizers, devastate our environment, while organic fertilizers enrich our soil).

I would say that flavor is generally the same between organic and non-organic produce. It is mostly a "just to be safe" decision.

I would suggest taking out some books on organic produce and what the organic label stands for (and which organic labels you can trust - there are multiple groups - USDA, QAI, etc - that certify organic produce, and not all of them have the same standards as others... for instance the USDA is becoming increasingly lenient with their organic label standards...). There is a lot of research out there about organic versus conventional.

Of course, if someone were to cut out their animal product and byproduct intake completely or at least greatly reduce it, they'd cut out a great majority of their chemical intake (meat and dairy and eggs tend to have the highest concentrations of chemicals because animals store them in their fatty tissues - we humans store environmental toxins and chemicals in our fatty tissue as well - you should also look into the types of chemicals detected in everyday American's fatty tissue samples - it is shocking the amount of hazardous material that our body ingests and absorbs and stores... it can't be doing us any good).

P.S. Where do you live? Organic bananas in the Chicago area are only 10 - 20 cents more a pound, if that... ?

Here's an interesting article on the practices used in non-organic banana production. I don't typically buy organic bananas, but after reading this article I may start. http://www.mindfully.org/Pesticide/chiqu...

they have more a p p e a l

This is actually a really interesting question. The truth is that the only difference they've been able to find is that well obviously there aren't any pesticides used in growing them and for the most part pesticides are yucky and they used to be really dangerous. So who wants that, right?

But the interesting part is that since even before the 90's they have been trying to prove that an organic apple actually has more vitamins and nutrients then a non-organic apple. And no matter what other posts you read on here I've done the research... they have not been able to conclusively prove it. Test after test, and so far there are studies on both sides of the debate and the scientific community has stated that there is no conclusive evidence that there are real health benefits in picking up an organic carrot instead of a non-organic carrot.

They have found that there are differences in the two, an organic tomato might have more flavanoids, etc. BUT we haven't been able to prove that that actually means the tomato is "healthier" and that our bodies able to absorb it. Which considering how many people really want to prove it's better, and considering all the money that's being pumped into trying to prove it I think it's interesting that nothing really conclusive has come out.

Everyone wants to think it's healthier so you'll have a lot of people saying it is. But if you actually read what scientists (not pro-organic, but neutral scientists) are saying about the studies, they are saying nothing is conclusive, and so the controversy continues. Here's an article from the mayo clinic, an unbiased group. Read what they have to say about the nutritional differences.

i would say that the health advantage of the organic banana is to the person who doesn't have to handle all the pesticides

With bananas, very little. Bananas don't tend to have significant pesticide residue, and the skin is thick and inedible which keeps what little there may be off of what you're eating. Organic does not guarantee a difference in actual nutritional content either, it only means that artificial chemicals were not used.

Ive been taught that pestisides keep bugs away and diseases. Personally Id like to know that my food didnt have insect poo on it but Im sure organic is perfectly fine......
Im open for trying anything though.

Buy the regular ones and you'll have more money left over to buy exercise equipment and multi-vitamins. There's an advantage for you!

wow I cant beat these answers!! I'd stick to the regular bananas if you eat regular fruit and veg...no point in just eating it when its organic and you have just eaten the vegies the night before that weren't...chemicals are already in your body!! Anyways...bananas being protected by a thick skin..I couldnt see too many pesticides getting through to the actual fruit?
Hope I am making sense...I'm kinda really tired!

I don't think there will be much difference. I would buy one of each to test, but if they are that expensive, I don't think I would be buying them by the bunch.

GEEEZ...we have been eating banana's for years, that aren't "organic". Hell, they are all organic for gosh sakes. Its a scam to raise the price. Who eats the peal of a banana? NOBODY, thats who. Food pesticides dont saturate the entire core of the fruit, they are surfactants. Tell the store to stick that banana where the sun dont shine.

they taste sooo much better.. they are obviously better for you because they have no chemicals added to them..to make them grow bigger and faster. they turn brown alot quicker though, because they are all natural soo you have to eat them fast..

They have no chemicals and anything without uneeded chemicals, growth chemicals in your body is good. Also organic food tastes better, if you want to see how much better, go to your supermarket and buy a chicken or a stake that is organic and cook it and eat it, it is better and healthier!
