I want to I become a vegetarian..?!

Question: I really want to become a vegitarian but I really do not think my parents are going to let me plus I just don't know how people are going to respond to it. My parents are always trying to get me to eat more and stuff cause I am skinny and i think they would think I am just trying to lose weight, but that is not the reason at all. Also I am sure they would think the whole Idea is stupid....Please help!!!!

Ask your parents to get the book "Becoming Vegetarian" for you. http://www.amazon.com/New-Becoming-Veget... If they refuse, buy it yourself and tell them they'll read it if they care about you and respect your decision. Your parents can not force you to eat meat. Just let them know that you are learning about the nutritional requirements, so you can pursue it safely. (It's perfectly safe but I understand that there are a lot of misconceptions about a meat-free diet.)

Vegetarianism might make you lose weight, but it might not. It depends on how many calories you're taking in. I know plenty of chubby vegetarians and even vegans.

Get a good cookbook too, so you and your family can prepare meals together. If they are always trying to get you to eat more, they'll need some veg cookbooks. This one is a great classic:

This one's pretty hearty:

well start out slow, cut meat and then chicken and little by little becoming a full vegitarian

One thing that I did back in September is I cut red meat from my diet. It's not as though I ate a lot of it before. I haven't been able to stand red meat for a long time. I feel better physically since I did cut it out. I eat chicken, turkey and sometimes fish and pork so I never miss red meat. Eat more veggies and experiment with the different ways of cooking them.

It's just food. Talk to your parents and don't worry what your friends will say.

"Flexitarian vegetarianism is for sane, intelligent people."---which is ironic considering it doesn't exist. A meat eating vegetarian is a contradiction in terms. Even the simplest folks know that. So where does that rank you flexis??

I agree with going slow. You are going to have to prove to your parents that you are serious, and that it isn't just a way to lose weight (especially if you are skinny already).

Tell them that there are lots of vegetarians where I live, including myself, and they aren't skinny at all. It has nothing to do with that. I am actually still overweight but eating meat wouldn't make me lose any. Probably just slow down my digestive system and make me gain more.

First of all, as one person said, do it gradually. First cut out eating pigs. Some like to call it pork, so that they don't have to think about the fact that it's a dead pig. Pork is commonly considered to be the least healthy of meats. So, convince your parents that you just can't eat pig anymore, and really don't want to eat cows either due to the heart risks. Then when it's time to convince them you don't want to eat chickens either, ask them if they know that the hormones in chickens help to cause or heighten arthritis, along with other possible health problems.

But keep eating fish occasionally until you are sure it's safe to not have any meat protein anymore. And that might take a year or more. Be careful.

Well... YOU control what goes in your mouth, not your parents.

Show them why you want to be a vegetarian. I showed my mom websites and videos. Say your not trying to convince them to change the way they eat my your trying to show them why you do not want to eat meat.

You and your parents will be a lot more happier if you are a flexitarian vegetarian ... most of your diet will be veggies and you eat small amounts of fish, seafood, and/or poultry. SOMETIMES on RARE occasions so you won't create a scene at a social gathering like strict vegetarians do, you can eat what is put in front of you.

Flexitarian vegetarianism is for sane, intelligent people. So I think they would be more open to this idea than to have you be a fanatical "strict" vegetarian. And you would be more happy as well, not having to deal with your peers that give you a lot of flack for being "odd".

Google "Flexitarian Diets" and check out some of the thousands and thousands of websites. Flexitarians are changing the entire idea of whatt it means to be vegetarian ... AND they are NORMAL>

I was in the same situation as you are but what I did was do a lot of research showing that I am serious about this choice and I found ways to get the same nutrients and and vitamins without eating meat. If you show that you really want this and you show that it is healthy, they should be accepting. Here's a good website to learn more......

My parents didn't want me to become a vegetarian at first because my mom didn't want to make me an alternative meal. I just had to prove to her that this is what I believe in. I gave her an essay that said why I thought eating meat was wrong, and she said that if that's really how I felt, then she'd let me.

You can be a vegetarian, and gain weight with starches and casseroles, really its healthier for you.

Nothing wrong with becoming a vegetarian as long as you know what you are doing. It could be bad if you don't. I would suggest if you are still under your parents control. You might take their advice. You will need your iron and amino acids. You can get them from vegetables but you will need to know which ones. If you are not going to be monitored by a doctor. You might want to just stop the red meat, and continue with poultry. Good luck, God bless-Bea

well this is the food you should eat and stay away from
stay away from:beef, pork and meat products
eat:fish,chicken,and a lot of vegetables

well i heard that people in other countries live longer because they eat right and stay healthly..but you should take it step by step until you become a full vegetarian!
