A type of cancer specific only to vegetarians?!
Recently he told me that there is a type of cancer that only affects vegetarians. He told me he read an article about it. When I asked to see it he could not locate it. I have looked online and I can't find the article or any research that states this.
I really would like to know more. Does anyone have links to research about a specific cancer that ONLY strikes vegetarians (basically people that consume meat do NOT get this type of cancer)?
I would like a handful of links if anyone has any available. Please, no answers that are opinions or off the top of your head unless you have read this article and can help me locate it.
P.S. This is more of a playful sibling rivalry thing, I am vegan and he's an omnivore.
Answers: My brother and I subscribe to a handful of science-related, health-related or psychology-related magazines and we exchange magazines all the time and keep abreast on new research.

Maggie,
Cancers are caused by not just one food or item, but, generally a whole lot of factors. People eating meat or veggies can both get cancer based on the preservatives, additives, flavouring agents, oils, preparation methods or utensils used for making dishes. Or the fertilisers used in cultivating the vegetables also can cause cancer.
But still, What you are reffering to must be "Gullet Cancer".
Check out this website.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/182415...
The site says "Researchers believe the increase in the use of nitrates since the Second World War may be to blame for the rise in this particular cancer. Initial tests have revealed a link between high levels of nitrate - contained naturally in fruit and vegetables - and the cancer. Gullet cancer - which occurs around the gastro-oesophaga junction where the oesophagus joins the stomach - kills more than 3,000 people in the UK every year. "
Hope this is useful..
Cheers..

i googled it and got tons of answers but i never once seen
what you were asking so i dont think this is so. since your brother eats everything (omnivore) then he is more at risk then you to get cancer
Never heard such a thing. I think he's just trying to get under your skin.
I think saying a diet can, or cannot, cause cancer is a real oversimplication of that desease in its various forms.
If it were that easy to isolate, we would understand far more about it and be much further down the road to irradication.
I've not heard of a cancer soley suffered by vegetarians, but i could be wrong.
The excessive use of pesticides on vegetables by untrained workers does cause cancer to some extent. But the problem is not as severe as due to animal products. Sometimes, vegetarians of under developed countries cannot afford balance diet and hence get cancer because of malnutrition. But all these have nothing to do with vegetarian diet as such. Don’t get carried away by any body
I think he's yanking your chain.
