What would happen to dairy herds if everyone went Vegan?!

Question: Wouldn't they all simply be killed outright?
I do not buy milk and dairy alone as I, too, have anxieties about this industry, but sometimes will eat products that contain it. I worry that ifdemand for dairy stopped completely, farmers would simply kill all "redundant" animals.

A world in which everyone was vegan would be compassionate and not revolve around money. Therefore, this would not happen. Also, by the time it reached that point, the demand for dairy would have fallen gradually and there wouldn't be any dairy cows left anyway, because each generation would have had slightly fewer calves.

Thank you. I also sometimes eat dairy. Report It

  • thats not gonna happen so why think about it?

    dog food

It wouldn't stop overnight. It would be gradual. And as the demand dwindled so would the supply.

ChefMark: we aren't trying to convert anyone. I have a hint for you, if you don't want to run into vegetarians and vegans, stay out of the V&V section, genius.

Dairy animals are kept because there is a market for dairy products. If that market disappeared then so would the dairy herds. If everyone in the world was vegan there wouldn't be any domestic cows, chickens, pigs, sheep or goats.

I wouldn't worry yourself unduly, the dairy industry is not likely to disappear just because a percentage of the population are vegan.

You certainly cannot send them out into the wild, since they are domesticated, they wouldn't know what to do if faced with a predator, or anything else a non domesticated animal would have to do to survive... Predators would consume all these animals, when there are none left, they'll probably die off too, since they have become dependent on these farm animals, then the world would destroy itself, and the universe would also blow up...so don't become vegan or the universe will implode!

It wouldn't happen overnight. The herds would lessen in line with the demand.

although dairy and meat is the biggest part of the cattle industry, it is not the only aspect of the business end of it many animals will be culled out and only a small portion will be retained for whatever purpose. and, obviously, you cannot expect to release hundreds of millions of farm animals into the wild and not expect some kind of environmental and ecological disaster.

That's an interesting question. One thing to remember is that the world simply is not going to go vegan overnight. As more and more people become vegan and the demand for milk gradually decreases, farmers will breed fewer cows. If the whole world eventually became vegan, the number of cows and other farm animals would only be a tiny fraction of the number that exists today.

If everyone went Vegan overnight, then every animal that is used for food or food products would be culled.

Even if the change was gradual, many of the animals would still be culled as the demand went down. They wouldn't just keep feeding them until they died of old age.

It would never happen "all of a sudden"
It would happen gradually, as it is now. The more educated that people are the more they will stop consuming dairy.
They will gradually decrease their herds until they are very rare. Then the prices for dairy will be so high that it will price many more out of consuming dairy.
Let's spread the word and get those dairy farmers being organic farmers instead! :-)

    their babies duh..they are mamals

No,If that ever happened some people would take a cow as a beloved family animal , we would never just see them needlessly slaughtered !! Right now there are precious few of us vegetarians on Earth let alone vegans so I think that day is a while off!!

We don't eat or milk wolves. They survive. So do zebras and elephants. So you needn't worry.
What you describe would have to happen if this change took place overnight, but it won't.

Yup, they would be killed and their corpses burned. Think about it. Dairy animals are basically milk machines. What happens to machines when they are no longer needed? They are removed from service and destroyed or recycled.
You cant recycle a dead cow, and given that in this scenario we are all vegan, we cant use any of the bits of cow for any purpose, so they will just have to be cremated.

yes they would kill them off and then they would become extinct...they are not axactly pets are they?...

Thankfully most people are not daft enough to think about going vegan, so the herds are safe. If they did though, for sure it would be bullet to the brain time.

The same goes for beef cattle, and pigs, and chickens, etc. If they no longer have a monetary value, they would be killed outright rather than having to spend money on them for feed, vet bills, etc. The greatest benefit to the life of an animal, is the fact that the animal is monetarily worth something.

What would happen to Yahoo answers if all veggetarians/vegans didn't try to convert everyone else???

i think it's cute how everybody thinks farmers would just keep reducing their herds....you are aware that this is how they make their living, right? so, lets look at some of the ideas...killing them all outright, hmmm, and the farmer would do what with a thousand dead cows? i think that if vegans ruled the world the demand for meat would probably diminish before dairy....setting them free....hmmmm, i think they would head straight for your organic garden, forcing you to come to terms with the real world in a hurry! silly vegans, i visited your world once on a wicked shroom trip...don't wanna go back! the real world is much more interesting!
