Jainism is one of these ancient cultures who were vegetarians... If a person moves on the path of Jainism, he will never eat any non veg food...In this religion, just thinking about killing or teasing someone (a human or any creature) is a sin. Eating non veg food is completely goes against Jainism. So..Jain people are vegetarian (Only who trust in this religion)

I know these things because...my name is Vikas Jain..I answer your question as per the modern time conditions...(Buddy...even some jain people are not obey this religion...so they eat non veg.)

Though I've never studied, or even met someone who has studied Jainism, I have seen news reports about Jains over the years.

Most notably, I remember a Jain (or group) suing McDonald's for using beef fat to cook their fries. They claimed they were mislead into eating animals, which they would never do.

I've also heard that some Jains will wear masks over their mouths to prevent them from swallowing small insects, follow a lifestyle similar to veganism, and some will not even consume root vegetables (i.e. potato) because it kills the plant.

Again, I would like to say that I've never studied Jainism to any extent, so take everything with a grain of salt.
