The reasons why, as a vegan, I don’t eat eggs is even in free range systems the hens are eventually killed, usually at a fraction of their lifetime, this is not acceptable to me. Also, and what most people don’t realise, is in a hatchery about 50% of the chicks hatched are male, they can’t lay eggs and because they are not specially bred “meat” chickens they are considered too scrawny so are gassed to death or homogenised (which is a massive mincer that they are tossed into alive). The male are considered as waste and in the UK 30 million male chicks are killed in these ways each year because of the egg industry.

As someone whose father lives next door to a dairy farming I can fully attest to the cruelty involved in milk production. The issue is about a continuous forced cycle of pregnancies to stimulate milk with the calf being removed each time they are born to the utter distress of both mother and calf. Males are killed within hours or sent for veal. Daughters sold to other farm (so they don’t attach to the mothers) or prevented from suckling by keeping them separate or putting clips with spikes on their noses to prevent them sucking. Then it’s an early death for mom in the slaughter house when milk production falls are dries up due to the stress of it all – they don’t get retired unless some compassionate sanctuary people step in (support vegan sanctuaries). I see this sorry cycle every year.

I hope this provides some clarification

no clue sry

If you are getting eggs from a small farm then the chickens probably have good lives, I try to buy from one or I get the cage free eggs. The only reason it is "wrong" to eat eggs is because they keep the chickens in what is called a battery cage. This is a very cruel thing. As for dairy, they treat the cows really bad. After the cow has a baby he/she is taken away from her to be used for veal or they are killed, often times thrown into a ditch and shot. They keep the cows indoors and they do not see the light of day, at least until they load them up in a huge double decker semi and are taken to slaughter. It is really sad:( I am trying to cut out dairy. Hope this helped.

You asked this question twice, and I already responded to the other time. Here's my response again (my opinion hasn't changed :P).

It seems you're a bit confused by the terms vegetarian and vegan. Vegans don't eat any animal product (i.e. honey, dairy, eggs, meat); vegetarians (sometimes; there are different levels) eat seafood, honey, eggs, and dairy.

Vegetarianism and veganism is about animal cruelty, which is why some do not eat dairy or eggs. Even if it is not an animal itself, the animal who produced it is tortured to do so. I hate PETA, but they have some good educational videos about the conditions that these animals live in - if you can even call it living. The treatment of the dairy cows and chickens is horrendous. Unfortunately, I don't have any links to them; I'm sure a quick Google search or somebody else who responds to your question might have them.

Personally, though, I do eat dairy on the rare occasion (cheese only) and I eat eggs that come from ethical farms. I'm trying to eventually become vegan, and I find it easier to do so gradually. I've already stopped eating honey, milk, seafood, and meat.

I am also a lacto-ovo vegetarian. Eggs are one of my main sources of protein, and I only eat eggs that are free-range. However, after watching Hug's Chicken Run on Channel 4 last week, I'm wondering just how "free-range" free-range eggs are.

As for dairy, with there being a history of Osteoporosis in my family, I need to get as much calcium into my diet to keep my bones strong.

I'm a vegetarian for health reasons (high blood pressure). I didn't get into it because of the animal cruelty issue. However, my eyes have been opened significantly since I changed my diet. I don't think eating eggs or dairy is wrong, but I do think it's wrong to support farms that overly exploit animals.

I don't think that I will ever be a strict vegetarian or a vegan, but I do know that I am one step in a good direction.

Besides health reasons (dairy has high amounts of fat and cholesterol), I abstain from eggs, milk and cheeses because dairy farms are closely tied to the meat industry.

Do some research about the chickens who lay eggs - they are crammed into small cages. They cannot open their wings. Their beaks are seared off so they won't peck one another or the farmers and there have been some cases where they were confined for SO long, their feet grew around the wires of the cages.
Diseases spread easily and quickly. Farmers give the animals antibiotic injections and any human who eats that also ingests the medication.
Just because they are not killed for their eggs, they are probably killed eventually for their meat. If I say that I'm against animal cruelty, I have to be against it in all forms - not only in the slaughtering process, but also how they're treated when they're alive.
You are what you eat!
