Ethical question for veg*ans?!
Would you start eating meat if it meant that 5 other people stopped eating meat?
Please no negative comments about veg*ans (I'm vegetarian) I'm just curious as to what people think.
Answers: This is a question for ethical veg*ans- if you are a veg*an other than for health reasons.

No, it would defeat the purpose. How can I believe in something if I don't set a good example for others? I would rather lead by example, and not feel like a hypocrite. I do this for my own beliefs and my own health. I don't preach to others about not eating meat, unless they tell me that my way of life is stupid first. I am the only vegetarian that i know. I live in a part of the country where being a vegetarian is practically unheard of and eating meat is considered macho... so I guess I'm used to questions like these. Plus, I just don't care for meat, it is gross.
why would anyone comprimise thier own belife to make other people conform to it.
What's with the asterisk?
Expect this question to get deleted. I've asked similar questions about ethics of vegans and they always get deleted.
It seems some vegans have no problems about lecturing you yet when you ask them to explain their point of view they run and cry to the admins and say 'my rights have been trampled on'.
I'd love to see some of the answers to this though.
I asked a question about drinking milk if it was done in a non cruel way. There was no flaming, no insults, and it got deleted without explanation.
My answer, I'd say if any vegan really believes their own crap, their automatic response should be 'YES.' If they truly feel eating animals is so wrong they'd be saving animals by eating meat based on your scenerio.
You are asking me if I will do something that I personally find abhorrent and disagree with so that five other people do not have to do it in my place. Sounds martyr-like and so, so noble of me, right? Wrong.
These kinds of situations NEVER happen in real life. They are irrelevant and make no real point. This is as old and tired as the questions in here asking "What if you were stuck on an island/lost in the woods/blah blah blah, would you drop your vegan lifestyle?"... obviously my own survival dominates my lifestyle in these situations and that does not prove or disprove the effectiveness of a vegan lifestyle.
Your question is sort of like,
Would you eat your father if your mother and brothers and sisters were spared?
Would you eat ten pounds of feces every day if five of your best friends stopped eating feces every day?
Would you start drinking heavily so that 5 people stopped drinking, period?
Every time it is my turn to be the martyr,i give up my turn to the next person.
This would be similar to asking Catholics or Christians if they would end their own live to save 5 other lives. This would be best answered if and when the situation actually comes up. Anything else is pure speculation. And frankly, the situation you mentioned is almost an impossibility.
If you were on the planet of Xarthon and the Xarthonians said that they would eat you if you did not kill and make love to the bodies of everyone in your family, would you do it, or would you use pixie dust to escape back to Earth?
Nope. I just refuse to consume animal flesh..
Thos sure is a silly question lol
This is not a new idea. It is a common ethical problem. The guy will explode a bomb and blow up 5,000 people unless you kill one person. These are lots of examples like these.
What do you do. It is simple. You are not responsible for anyone else but you are responsible for yourself. So you do not kill anyone and if the guy kills 5,000 people, he has to pay for his actions. If you kill that 1 person then you have to pay for it even if in imagination (YOU NEVER KNOW FOR SURE) you save 5,000 people.
Veg* means vegetarian or vegan or to a computer it means any word that starts with those 3 letters like vegimite.
No. I don't do it for anyone else but myself and I wouldn't sacrifice my beliefs for a hypothetical that makes no sense anyway.
Whiz: it's actually "veg*n" and the asterisk takes the place of "a" in vegan and "etaria" in vegetarian to be shorthand for "vegetarian(s) and/or vegan(s)"
Why do you spell vegan veg*an?
