Veg*n Community! I need your help?!

Question: I am searching for papers on Vegetarianism being healthy/not healthy .

I need some of both

when I say "papers " I mean scientific documents from reliable sources.

Therefore the following WON'T help: Articles, Blogs, Pro/Anti Veg*n websites

I have a good friend who strongly believes that I am damaging my health by being Vegetarian, and I need to sort this out by showing him that its not OR maybe papers posted here will convince me he is right.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

It's fairly clear that vegetarianism, with a sound knowledge of basic nutrition, lowers mortality for heart disease.

Jezebel's link links to a full PDF of the position paper of the American Dietetic/Canadian Dietitians. This is a link off the Dietitians of Canada website.

British medical journal on vegetarians and other 'health conscious persons' showing reduced ischemic heart disease (by about half) - only abstracts unless you have a work or university password to view the whole paper:

Mortality from ischemic heart disease was 24% lower in vegetarians than in nonvegetarians - American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, "Mortality in vegetarians and nonvegetarians: detailed findings from a collaborative analysis of 5 prospective studies."

Vegetarians have lower gastrointestinal disturbances and cancers than non-veggies, but nonvegetarians can plan their diet to make it more resemble a vegetarian's and get the same benefit. Digestive Disorders. "Vegetarianism, dietary fibre and gastro-intestinal disease."

Vegetarians do not have a significantly greater risk of low zinc status than omnivores. British Journal of Nutrition. "Zinc intake and status in Australian vegetarians"

Increased meat protein intake correlated with higher incidence of hip fracture. Calcified Tissue Int'l. "Cross-cultural association between dietary animal protein and hip fracture: A hypothesis"

You could always take the American Dietetic Association as well as the Dieticians of Canada's word for it. They both support vegetarian and vegan diets for ALL stages of life. Or is that not trustworthy enough?

Show your friend the Elephant it is 100% Veg.

I have not read such papers directly, but have seen them quoted in books.

You can take a look at pcrm.org
They would know, and also they do some research of their own.

Click on "Clinical Research", a few are published there, but send them a message.

Check out "Diet for a New America" and "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins. His books are very well researched and include citations that will give you plenty of further reading. You can also read "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell which covers an extensive study of dietary impact on health.
