Insulin resistance and a vegan/vegetarian diet?!

Question: I heard that a vegan/vegetarian diet could help improve insulin resistance, but it seems like that would probably promote a high carbohydrate diet. A high carbohydrate diet aggravates my insulin resistance and makes me gain weight rapidly. I'm interested in becoming vegetarian, but I don't want to gain weight.

Does anyone know anything about this or could anyone provide me with links so I could gather more information about it?

Check out this site, it has a fair bit of information regarding being a healthy vegetarian. It does promote a high carb diet, but takes the position that as long as those carbs are complex instead of simple that it won't cause weight gain. Read through it yourself and see what you think.

Good luck.

I've read that it depends what type of carbs you eat--what their glycemic index is, but I can't find the source where I learned that. In the meantime, here are some links that might help you. The third one refers you to some books that might be helpful for you. Of course, talking to a registered dietitian is always your best bet before changing your diet if you have health concerns.

If the vegetarian food is heavy on grains, breads and pastas, it will probably give you problems.
If you SPROUT the grains and then make them into various treats, you will do far better.
If you rely on raw foods... raw nuts and seeds (and pate or butters made from them), avocados, greens, fruit and the like, you will be getting the enzymes that you need inside the foods that you need to digest those foods.

My dad, a chiropractor, spent a chunk of his practice coaching people in how to eat right... turned a lot of hypoglycaemics around... "you will get the pancreatic punch-up if you drink apple juice, but not if you eat a real apple."

I know several diabetics who reset their bodies and and overcame diabetes and a whole range of other problems that went with it.

So don't eat so many refined carbs. Focus on eating fresh fruits and vegetables, and whenever you do eat breads or pastas, make them whole-grain.

I'm dealing with the same problem. If by Carbs you mean "Starchy" food you are right but a really GOOD Veggie/Vegan diet is not based on those foods. Base your diet on NON starchy Veggies, the key is Low Glycemic Index foods. http://www.pcrm.org/magazine/gm06autumn/...

I personally eat a high percentage of my diet as RAW, eating lots of Low Fat Fresh Salads, lightly cooked Veggies. If you use any starches make is Whole Grain Brown Rice in small servings, same with pasta. I only do 1/2 the amount of what is considered a serving & find it doesn't trigger blood sugar or Insulin resistance.

I hope will be of some help.
